Engineering firm Cavotec has won an order for the delivery of motorized cable reel systems for integration onto advanced rail-mounted gantry cranes at the Port of TokyoCavotec will supply motorized cable reel systems for eight automated rail-mounted gantry cranes at the Wan Hai Tokyo Oi5 terminal, a major global container handling hub. The cable reels will ensure the cranes meet demanding performance requirements due to surging container volumes. Working with Chin Pan engineering group, Cavotec is scheduled to complete the delivery of the systems in early 2023.

Japan’s port of Tokyo will waive an entry fee from next month for ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen, as well as LNG bunkering ships, in a bid to promote the use of cleaner marine fuels, authorities said on Friday.The exemption runs for five years from April 1, and an official of the Tokyo metropolitan government said the neighboring ports of Yokohama and Kawasaki would also apply it to LNG-powered and LNG bunkering ships.“The waiver is aimed at contributing to global efforts to boost use of cleaner fuels and support faster development of hydrogen-powered ships,” the off

Lines (MOL) announced that the MOL-operated Tokyo International Container Terminal (TICT) reached a major milestone on August 21—a cumulative total of 20 million TEUs handled.The terminal started operations in November 1971, and in December of that year, the full containership Kamakura Maru, serving the Asia-Europe route, was the first vessel to call at TICT. On October 3, NYK Joanna, a containership operated by NYK, rescued seven fishermen in distress off the coast of the Philippines. While the NYK vessel was sailing on October 3 from Vungtau, Vietnam, to Tokyo, Japan, the ship’s crew discovered the fishermen drifting off the coast of Philippines and rescued all of them in about two hours. The fishermen had departed from Pangasinan in the Philippines on September 30, and their boat had overturned and sunk in bad weather on October 2. Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp, Japan's biggest steelmaker, may start talks on a contract to transport iron ore from Brazilian miner Vale on Valemax ships, the world's biggest bulk carriers, to cut costs, a senior official said. Such a contract would be a boost for Vale, which is trying to increase use of the ships after China in 2012 prevented the world's biggest iron ore miner from docking the giant vessels in its ports to protect its own shipping companies. The 400,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) vessels could cut Nippon Steel's shipping costs by at least $400,000 on each cargo.
