Converted OSV Enters Service in the UK as an Underwater Surveillance Ship

A converted offshore support vessel has taken on a new life as a dedicated underwater surveillance ship for the U.K.'s Royal Navy.Christened during a ceremony in London on October 10, RFA Proteus will be operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary as a launchpad for remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROV) and a home to a suite of specialist capabilities similar to those found in the offshore oil and gas industry.The ship, built in 2017 as a subsea construction vessel named Topaz Tangaroa, was acquired by the U.K.

TDI-Brooks Installs Starlink on Its Research Vessels

U.S. based marine services firm TDI-Brooks announced it has installed the Starlink Maritime platform on two of its four research vessels, with plans to equip the remaining vessels at a later date.The two vessels, Brooks McCall and Miss Emma McCall, are currently working on the U.S. East Coast performing G&G surveys for offshore wind programs. Robert Allan Ltd Designs ATB Convoys for Aliança Navegação e Logística

Canadian naval architecture and marine engineering firm Robert Allan Ltd. said it has been awarded a contract by Rio Maguari Shipyard (Estaleiro Rio Maguari – ERM), located in Belém, Brazil, to develop the design package for an innovative Articulated Tug and Barge (ATB) for shipping containers along the coast of Brazil. Huntington Ingalls Industries Debuts Proteus USV

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) debuted the 27-foot Proteus unmanned surface vessel (USV) for testing and development of autonomy capabilities. Proteus, outfitted with Sea Machines Robotics’ SM300 autonomy system, completed a successful demonstration off the coast of Panama City, Fla., on May 14.“We are thrilled to launch our Proteus USV. The vessel performed exactly as expected with the SM300 system’s proven and safe autonomous capability,” said Duane Fotheringham, president of the Unmanned Systems business group in HII’s Technical Solutions division.

Transocean Puts Off Deliveries of Two New Drillships

Transocean Ltd. announced today a mutual agreement with its customer, Shell EP Wells Equipment Wells Services B.V. (Shell), and the shipyard, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME), to delay the operating and delivery contracts of two newbuild ultra-deepwater drillships - the Deepwater Pontus and the Deepwater Poseidon - by 12 months each. The delay has no impact on the duration or dayrate of the original 10-year operating contracts for each of the two newbuild ultra-deepwater drillships. Parties will be compensated for the postponement. The specific terms are not disclosed. The delivery and operating agreements for Shell's two other contracted Transocean newbuild, ultra-deepwater drillships, the Deepwater Thalassa and Deepwater Proteus, are not impacted by this agreement.

Protea Launches Heavy-Lift Cranes

Protea, a manufacturer of offshore handling equipment, launched two types of heavy lift cranes at Nor-Shipping in Oslo earlier this year. “The target of any marine crane design is to provide high lifting performance whilst minimizing overall weight,” said Tomasz Paszkiewicz, Protea’s CEO. The two new crane types are the latest additions to the Proteus crane family. The first is a 1,600mT SWL floating crane targeted at the offshore wind market for the installation of offshore wind turbines.

Damen Delivers 1st 'Fugro Proteus' to Fugro

Fugro has taken delivery today of the first of three Fugro Offshore Coastal Survey Vessels (FOCSV) being built by Damen. The first of a new class, the Fugro Proteusis a compact, surveyship capable of undertaking a wide range of survey, monitoring and inspection operations. The vessel is designed for a variety of survey and inspections duties including light geotechnical work, environmental baseline surveys, monitoring and inspection, and moonpool deployments. Diesel electric propulsion delivers excellent economy at all speeds. Fugro Proteus is the first of three survey vessels ordered by Fugro for delivery in 2014. Each will be operating in a different part of the world and so they have been adapted for the individual environments in which they will work.

Blyth Workcat Joins Osiris Projects Survey Fleet

A new 14-meter catamaran has been delivered to coastal survey specialists Osiris Projects by leading GRP workboat builders Blyth Workcats. The new boat, named Proteus of Liverpool, has been custom-built at the Blyth Workcats yard on Canvey Island, U.K., to provide a fast yet stable and comfortable working platform for coastal survey work. The boat has been fitted with a range of high specification sonar and acoustic positioning systems that will provide the company’s clients with high quality survey data enhanced by the stability of the new boat.

Osiris Projects Launches New Survey Vessel

Specialist seabed mapping company Osiris Projects has this week launched the fifth vessel in their fleet, the 14m GRP catamaran MV Proteus. Designed to provide an excellent working platform for coastal survey operations, MV Proteus can work up to 60 miles from a safe haven under MCA Category 2 and has a maximum speed of 24 knots. The vessel benefits from a shallow draft of just 1m making her ideal for inshore operations, while the hull design ensures exceptional maneuverability at both low and high speeds and incorporates a low drag profile providing excellent fuel economy.

Kongsberg debut its latest integrated naval training solution at I/ITSEC 2012 Show in Orlando, Florida. Proteus Interact (Integrated Naval Training Environment for Resource management And Crew Teamwork) is a joint development between the simulation and training departments of Kongsberg, and is the first solution designed to offer fully integrated naval training for complex multi-skills, team and force-level integrated naval scenarios. It uses a low-risk high level architecture (HLA) to create a federation of Kongsberg Proteus naval training solutions and Polaris Ship Bridge Simulators.

Galinis Commands NAVSEA's SUPSHIP Gulf Coast

Dexter as commanding officer of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) field activity, Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), Conversion and Repair, Gulf Coast, Sept. 18 in a ceremony in Pascagoula, Miss. Retired Rear Adm. Mark Hugel gave the ceremony's keynote address. NAVSEA Commander, Vice Adm. MV Fairlane Completes Heavy Lift Project

In the Exmouth sub-basin, offshore Northwest Australia, Apache Energy ltd. is developing the Van Gogh oilfield on behalf of a joint venture of the same name. As part of the Vincent field, it lies in water depths of 1,115.5 to 1,214 ft. An FPSO will be used for production and storage of the oil. The FPSO will be moored to a disconnectable turret-mooring (DTM) buoy, moored to the seabed with nine anchors. Flexible flowlines, which connect to two subsea manifolds and the production wellheads, will be attached to the buoy.

CAD/CAM: Producing Better, More Cost Efficient Ships

The advent of software solutions has infiltrated nearly every sector of the maritime market - from propulsion performance monitoring packages to personnel. It arguably has had no greater impact, though, than in the design and construction of new vessels. CAD/CAM/CAE programs are invaluable assets to the designer, builder and operator of vessels of all sizes and dimensions. Not only do advanced programs allow for the creation of the an efficient and cost effective ship structure and outfitting, they provide for enhanced manufacturing practices and techniques, and increasingly help devise a life-cycle maintenance and care plan which can tack profitable years onto a vessel's life.

Navy Awards SCE With SBIR Grant

The U.S. Navy recently awarded NCE a Phase II SBIR Grant for the development of shipboard noise prediction software. The funding is from the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) but is being overseen by Kurt Yankaskas, the head of Surface Ship Silencing at NAVSEA. Under this grant, NCE will develop its proprietary Advanced Ship Acoustic Program (ASAP) into a commercial software package for use by shipyards and naval architects. The objective is to perform noise predictions during a vessel's design process to insure optimal noise control is used. It is intended that the noise modeling program be integrated into the Proteus Engineering (Stevensville, MD) suite of naval architecture programs called FlagShip.

CAD/CAM

Autoship Systems Corporation (ASC) has developed a complete CAD/CAM suite to meet the CAD/CAM needs in marine vessel design and construction, including two key programs in the CAD/CAM suite: Autostructure 3.0 and Production Manager 3.0. Autostructure and Production Manager are key components in the Autoship CAD/CAM suite, offering shipyards complete solutions in structural design, pre-construction drawing preparation and part nesting. Autostructure is used to create a 3D model of a vessel structure and to output the parts of that model in CAD format. The CAD representation can be used either to prepare construction drawings or for input to NC cutting processors.
