Thailand Rushes to Avert Spill After Fatal Accident on Oil Storage Ship

Authorities in Thailand on Thursday were working to avert a leak from a storage vessel carrying 400,000 barrels of crude oil.One crew member was killed after seawater entered the hull of the Benchamas 2 when a seal malfunctioned during maintenance earlier this week.Navy spokesperson Admiral Prokgrong Monthatphalin said multiple agencies were working to recover the body of the dead crewman, fix the leak and avert an oil spill."The vessel's condition is safe and weather conditions are not interfering with the rescue operations. Thailand Deploys Ships to Contain Second Oil Leak Off East Coast

Ships were deployed in Thailand on Thursday to contain a fresh oil spill off its eastern coast, authorities said, two weeks after an undersea pipeline leak in the same area damaged coastal communities and marine life.The pipeline, owned by Star Petroleum Refining Public Company (SPRC), sprang a leak on Jan. 26 and spewed an estimated 47,100 to 55,000 litres (12,443 to 14,529 gallons) of oil into the sea.It was patched up within a day but not before it damaged a beach area in Rayong province and threatened corals in the shallow waters.The same pipeline on Thursday spilled a further 5…

Thailand’s MTT Arranges Emergency Response Framework

The Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal Company (MTT) has signed an official preparedness framework agreement with Ardent. The deal is the first of its kind in Thailand and is specifically structured to mitigate risk by pre-staging response elements and training Thai-based terminal operators to work with emergency management elements. MTT is a commercial port and storage terminal dedicated for liquid and gaseous petrochemical products. MTT terminal, comprising of four marine jetties and 33 storage tanks, is able to support more than 20 varieties of petrochemical products.

Caterpillar Volunteers Build Thailand Houses for Disadvantaged

The company had more than 100 of Caterpillar's personnel volunteer to help build homes for low-income families in Rayong Province, Thailand. The home building project is part of Caterppillar's commitment to communities where ther employees live and work. The Caterpillar Foundation invested in Habitat for Humanity Thailand, a non-profit organization, which funded the construction of 12 homes for low-income families in three locations in Rayong Province (Nong Lalok Sub-District, Nong Taphan Sub-District and Samnak Thon Sub-district).

An integrated humanitarian assistance disaster relief scenario by the US & Thai navies was included in a simulated earthquake & tsunami in Rayong Province during the CARAT Thailand 2013 joint exercises.
