The search for the Argentinian submarine was like hunting for the proverbial needle in a hay stack, except that it was a piece of straw. Elaine Maslin reports. At 7.19am, local time, on November 15, 2017, the last message was received from the San Juan submarine. She belonged to the Argentinian navy and was on a routine mission from Ushuaia in the Patagonia region to Mar del Plata in Buenos Aires province when she lost contact with the military. Fifteen days later, neither the submarine nor any debris had been found and the crew of 44 sailors were presumed dead.

Ultramax Newbuild Delivered to Genco

Drybulk cargo shipper Genco Shipping & Trading Limited announced that it has taken delivery of a 64,000 dwt Ultramax newbuild vessel Baltic Scorpion. The Baltic Scorpion is the third of four Ultramax vessels to be delivered to the company under Baltic Trading's agreements with Yangfan Group Co., Ltd. The Baltic Scorpion is expected to be delivered to its charterer, Swissmarine Asia Pte. Ltd., on or about August 8, 2015 to commence a spot market-related time charter for 14 to 18.5 months. The rate for the spot market-related time charter will be based on 115.5 percent of the average of the daily rates of the Baltic Supramax Index (BSI), published by the Baltic Exchange, as reflected in daily reports.

Executive Changes at Transocean

Transocean Ltd. today announced that, as mutually agreed with the company, Esa Ikaheimonen is stepping down as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer effective immediately. Mr. Ikaheimonen has also resigned his company-appointed position as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Transocean Partners LLC, a subsidiary of Transocean. Munson Delivers Fireboat to Vancouver

Munson Boats announced its latest delivery of a 46’ Type IV Fire Emergency Response Vessel for the City of Vancouver Fire Department. Fully designed and built by Munson Boats in Burlington, Wash. the new vessel will operate in the lower Columbia River and can respond to incidents from Astoria, Ore. to Lewiston, Idaho. Twin Scania DI13-77M diesels producing a total of 1,500 horsepower are coupled to Hamilton 364 waterjets to achieve speeds in excess of 32 knots. The fire pump system delivers a maximum 2,500 gallons per minute (GPM) to eight fire hose hydrants and three available monitors.

Viking Welding Delivers Fire/Rescue Boats

Fire Departments in South Carolina and Minnesota have recently accepted delivery of Response FR-28 and FR-31J boats built of welded aluminum by Viking Welding & Fabrication in Kensington, N.H. The boats were designed by Response Marine in Newburyport, Mass. The FR-28 specifications were developed by Mount Pleasant Fire Department in South Carolina to improve firefighting and rescue capability in the coastal areas surrounding Mount Pleasant, which include Charleston Harbor, Gray Bay and Hamlin Sound. Scorpion Ribs Shows Their Sting with Dyena

Scorpion Ribs set the benchmark for design and quality, both of which are clear in any of their boats and especially true in their latest Scorpion Sting, but now they can also provide proof of the ride quality and performance of their vessels from the data obtained using the Dyena Acceleration Recorder. The Dyena Acceleration Recorder (DaccR) is proving to be a valuable tool for the development and comparison of fast boats. Traditionally, most boat operators have relied upon subjective comparison to evaluate the differences between vessels.

Scorpion RIBs Chooses Raymarine

SeaArk Marine, Inc. recently completed a 27-ft Commander RAM fire/rescue boat for the Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department in Indian Head, Md. Donjon Marine to Recover Historic War Vessel

Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a global marine services provider based in N.J., served as the lead salvage contractor to the U.S. Navy to coordinate the locating and initial archeological investigation of the USS Scorpion, the flagship of a U.S. Navy fleet known as the Chesapeake Flotilla during the War of 1812. The recovery of the vessel is to be accomplished in two to three phases. Phase one, just completed, was designed to locate and conduct preliminary preparatory work for the more extensive archeological work to be done in concert with the bicentennial celebration of the War of 1812.

Keppel Joint Venture, Azerbaijan Shipyard

President of Azerbaijan, HE Ilham Aliyev breaks ground for the new yard in the presence of Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr George Yeo. Fortifying its presence in the Caspian Region, Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited (Keppel O&M) joins hands with State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and Azerbaijan Investment Company (AIC) to develop and manage a new 52-ha shipbuilding and shiprepair facility in Baku, Azerbaijan. The new SOCAR-Keppel Shipyard will be developed over a period of two to three years with an investment of US$386 million.

Keppel to build Scorpion Semisub

Keppel FELS Limited was contracted to build its proprietary DSS 38 deepwater semisubmersible (semi) rig for Scorpion Offshore Ltd (Scorpion). The contract with Scorpion is subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions by mid July 2008. It is valued at $405 million. The amount excludes owner-supplied drilling and subsea equipment. Upon its completion in the fourth quarter of 2011, this semi will be chartered by Scorpion to Brazilian national oil company Petrobras for a period of six years.

Keppel, Seadrill, Scorpion, Lewek in Talks

Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited (Keppel O&M) has received indications from Seadrill Limited, Scorpion Offshore Ltd, and Lewek Shipping Pte Ltd that they are reviewing their options on their newbuilding contracts that were signed in the middle of this year. The contracts under review are for a semisubmersible for Scorpion Offshore, two jackup rigs for Seadrill and a Multi-Functional Support Vessel for Lewek Shipping. Keppel O&M is in talks with them to arrive at mutually acceptable arrangements for these contracts. Construction work has not started on these projects, for which Keppel O&M has received downpayments. If these contracts are cancelled…

Keppel, Seadrill Continue Rig Builds

The wholly owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited (Keppel O&M), Keppel FELS Limited, and Seadrill Jack-Ups Ltd have agreed to continue with the building of the two jackups on revised terms that are mutually beneficial. The contract value of the two jackups is $420m. Keppel FELS Limited and Scorpion Offshore have agreed to terminate the $405m rig contract on mutually acceptable terms. Scorpion Offshore is working closely with Keppel FELS in the latter’s exploratory discussions with interested third parties to take over the building of the semisubmersible. The outcome of these discussions are highly uncertain. Keppel Singmarine and Lewek Shipping are currently working towards an amicable mutual termination of their contract and this is expected to be finalised shortly.

Keppel Completes 5 Scorpion Jackups

Keppel AmFELS Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited (Keppel O&M) in the US Gulf of Mexico, has delivered the jackup drilling rig, Offshore Intrepid, to Scorpion Intrepid Ltd. a subsidiary of Scorpion Offshore Ltd. (Scorpion) on time. With this delivery, Keppel AmFELS has completed the series of five LeTourneau Super 116 jackup rigs commissioned by Scorpion in 2005 without delay. Offshore Intrepid was named by Mrs. Drucie Cole, spouse of Mr. Jon Cole, Scorpion’s President & CEO, at the Keppel AmFELS yard on 24 January 2009.

Peter M. Palermo Passes Away

The Ship Structure Committee (SSC) announced that Peter M. Palermo died on 20 May in Alexandria. Palermo was the Navy's Principal Member from 1976-1987. Palermo was the head of all structures at NAVSEA from the late 60's until the 80's. He was a very strong supporter of the SSC and had many of his people involved with the SSC projects. Palermo co-authored two papers from the 1975 SSC Symposium entitled, "Today's Navy - Echoes of the Past - Sounds of the Future" and "An Overview of Structural Integrity Technology." He served on the 1996 SSC 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee of the Symposium Steering Committee. He gave his speech "History of the Ship Structure Committee, Its Work and Challenges for the Future" at the 50th Anniversary Celebration Banquet.

Scorpion Names Offshore Freedom

ABS representatives attended the naming ceremony for Scorpion Offshore’s ultra-premium, LeTourneau Super 116E jackup, ABS-classed and built at Lamprell Shipyard in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This is the sixth jackup for Scorpion classed by ABS. Offshore Freedom is capable of operating in up to 400-ft water depth and has a 30,000-ft drilling capacity. ABS has classed a series of five Scorpion rigs (Offshore Courageous, Offshore Defender, Offshore Resolute, Offshore Vigilant and Offshore Intrepid) all of the same LeTourneau design delivered progressively throughout 2007 and 2008 from Keppel Amfels’ yard in Brownsville. The seventh and final ABS-classed jackup for Scorpion, Offshore Mischief, is scheduled for delivery the fourth quarter of this year from Lamprell.
