ClassNK: New Software System for Container Carriers

(PRESS RELEASE) ClassNK released its new structural design support system PrimeShip-HULL for Container Carriers to correspond with its latest rule amendments. To promote container carrier safety, ClassNK released amendments to its Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships on December 25, 2015. The amendments, based on findings from ClassNK’s investigation into a large container carrier casualty, include updates to independent longitudinal strength requirements and reflect the new IACS Unified Requirements (UR) S11A and S34. These amendments will apply to container carriers contracted for construction on or after 1 April 2016, three months before the application of the IACS UR S11A and S34.

NAPA Streamlines Compliance with Class Design Rules

Global maritime software, services and data analysis company NAPA announced the release of new tools and interfaces with class society software to streamline ship design compliance with Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers (CSR BC&OT; formerly known as “harmonized CSR”) from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Updates to 3D structural design software, NAPA Steel, and the release of state-of-the-art geometry modeling tool, NAPA Designer, will deliver a shift from 2D to 3D design requirements.

ClassNK & NAPA tie-up to Improve Ship Design

ClassNK and leading global maritime software company NAPA have announced a new joint project to reduce the time and cost of designing vessels in accordance with the new IACS harmonised Common Structural Rules. The new project will enhance the data linkage between ClassNK’s PrimeShip-HULL(HCSR) design support software with NAPA’s 3D model based integrated design software NAPA Steel greatly improving the efficiency of the ship design process and reducing the cost of designing vessels in accordance with the new rules. Adopted in 2013, the IACS harmonised CSR will be applied to all tankers over 150m and all bulk carriers over 90m contracted after 1 July 2015.

Herbert-ABS Opens Korea Office

Herbert-ABS Software Solutions LLC, a company in marine regulatory, load management, salvage and ship design software, said it has opened an office in Busan to reinforce support for Korean-based shipyards, as well as improve the quality of service to this key market. Herbert-ABS also has an office in Shanghai and earlier this year expanded into Singapore. The Busan office will be led by Arnold (Woo-Sung) Cho, Marketing and Sales Manager, whose primary focus will be to strengthen relationships with the Korean yards. Herbert-ABS Opens Singapore Office

Herbert-ABS Software Solutions LLC, a marine regulatory, load management, salvage and ship design software company, has opened an office in Singapore to reinforce service and support for Asia-based shipowners, operators and shipyards, the company said. The new office will be led by Director and Naval Architect Rob Tagg, who will expand the activities and strategic plans of Herbert Engineering and Herbert-ABS Software, primarily supporting installations and sales of its CargoMax and HECSALV software products. Herbert-ABS is a joint venture with ABS so the expansion to Singapore is also intended to leverage the strong local presence they have in Southeast Asia.

Ship Design Specialists Open New Asian Offices

Nupas-Cadmatic, CAD ship design software provider, opens new office in Goa, India and another in Singapore. Nupas-Cadmatic ship design software is a joint-venture product of Numeriek Centrum Groningen B.V. and Cadmatic Oy. The offices were established in response to the rapid expansion of Nupas-Cadmatic in Asia. The main purpose of the offices is to provide services to the Nupas-Cadmatic customers in the region in cooperation with the support team at the head offices in Europe. In India today there are two offices. Where sales management is done from the Mumbai office, support and sales assistance will come from the newly opened Goa office. The Singapore office will participate in providing local support to the Singaporean market.

Rolls-Royce Selects Paramarine Ship Design Software

Paramarine software, developed by QinetiQ GRC, has been selected by Rolls-Royce who is broadening its ship design capabilities. Paramarine will be Rolls-Royce’s marine design software tool of choice in support of their newly formed team dedicated to the development of naval ship designs. Rolls-Royce has been at the forefront of innovative ship design for nearly 40 years, designing over 800 vessels, used mainly in the commercial sector. This new ship design team will create innovative designs for customers such as navies, coast guards and other maritime agencies. The primary focus will be on offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) and naval auxiliary opportunities, rather than large combatant ships such as frigates and destroyers.

Brazil Shipbuilding: Soaring to New Heights

The recent growth of the Brazilian shipbuilding industry, with the construction of more than 20 new shipyards and efforts to modernize older shipyards, has highlighted the need for more efficient ship design and construction methods. New Navy Contracts

DRS C3 System, Inc., Stevensville, Md., is being awarded a $7,935,427 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for research and development activities associated with integrated power system (IPS) advanced modules and IPS ship design tools. This effort supports the research and development of various alternative technologies associated with advanced power systems and development of ship design tools that support the design development of advanced IPS ship concepts and that quantifies technical risks associated with the integrated technology. DRS C3 System, Inc will develop an advanced hydrodynamics simulation tool and related ship design software and an advanced design, modeling & simulation tool for capability-based ship design that includes IPS technology.

New Ship Design Courses for U.S. Shipbuilding

The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) Modern Shipbuilding Design project team has completed and delivered five continuing education marine design courses: Basics of Electrical System Design, Basics of HVAC Design, Basics of Pipe System Modeling, Basics of Structural Modeling, and Design for Production. Intergraph and DNVS Software Sign Letter of Intent

Intergraph Corporation and Det Norske Veritas Software (DNVS) have signed a letter of intent to complete a software licensing and distribution agreement. The proposed five-year, multi-million dollar agreement includes collaboration by the two companies in the shipbuilding, offshore and plant design markets. Under terms of the letter of intent, DNVS will market and distribute Intergraph's next-generation shipbuilding design applications to the shipbuilding industry. Additionally, Intergraph will license its SmartPlant(R) platform technology to DNVS. Intergraph and DNVS will work together to combine their respective engineering and lifecycle data management applications.

CAD/CAM

Autoship Systems Corporation (ASC) has developed a complete CAD/CAM suite to meet the CAD/CAM needs in marine vessel design and construction, including two key programs in the CAD/CAM suite: Autostructure 3.0 and Production Manager 3.0. Autostructure and Production Manager are key components in the Autoship CAD/CAM suite, offering shipyards complete solutions in structural design, pre-construction drawing preparation and part nesting. Autostructure is used to create a 3D model of a vessel structure and to output the parts of that model in CAD format. The CAD representation can be used either to prepare construction drawings or for input to NC cutting processors.

Intergraph, LR to Team on Ship Interface

Intergraph Corporation reached an agreement with Lloyd's Register to build an interface between Intergraph's IntelliShip multi-discipline ship design software, and the Lloyd's Register assessment applications, RulesCalc and ShipRight SDA. The interface will result in significantly greater efficiencies in the classification process for Lloyd's Register classed ships. IntelliShip coupled with this new interface will improve the overall ship design, certification, construction and commissioning process. Shipyards and ship designers can readily check the model created in IntelliShip against Lloyd's Register's classification rules, eliminating redundant modeling and reducing errors.
