Hyundai Heavy Foreign Ship Orders At $440M

Hyundai Heavy Foreign Ship Orders At $440M South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. won $440 million in foreign shipbuilding orders for 11 vessels so far this month. The details are as follows: -Taiwan's Yangming Marine Transport Corp. ordered two 5,500 teu container carriers -A Greek shipping firm ordered two 172,000 dwt bulk carriers -An Indian shipping firm ordered one 75,000 dwt bulk carrier -South Africa's Safbulk ordered four 172,000 dwt bulk carriers -Turkey's Besiktas ordered one 165,000 dwt crude carrier -Liberia's Countess Shipping ordered one 73,000 dwt oil product carrier

Japanese Foreign Ship Orders Up

Japanese shipyards in May received foreign ship orders for 16 vessels, or 669,000 grt, up 371.8 percent from May 1998, the Japan Ship Exporters' Association said. The level, however, was down 43.9 percent from May 1997, it said. Orders in May consisted of nine bulk carriers and seven oil tankers. In April, foreign ship orders fell 40.1 percent year-on-year.

Japanese shipyards received foreign orders for 38 vessels totaling 1,350,650 grt in September, up 175 percent from a year before, the Japan Ship Exporters' Association said last week. A breakdown of September showed 35 orders were for bulk carriers, and three orders for oil tankers, it said. In August, foreign ship orders totaled 1,063,280 grt, up 110.3 percent year on year. The statistics account for orders association members received for steel vessels of 500 grt or more.

The tonnage jumped 728.4 percent compared to orders received a year earlier, a spokesperson said. Thirty-five orders were for bulk carriers, seven for freighters and two for oil tankers. The statistics cover orders received by association members for steel vessels of 500 gt or more. In September, foreign ship orders rose 175 percent year on year.

Japanese Foreign Ship Orders Plummet Nearly 25%

Japanese shipyards in June received foreign ship orders for 20 vessels, or 667,500 grt, down 24.4 percent from a year earlier, the Japan Ship Exporters' Association said. All of June's orders were bulk carriers. The most recent figure represented an increase of 17.8 percent compared to June 1997, it said. Last month, May orders marked a year-on-year increase of 371.8 percent.

Daewoo Sees Strong LNG Ship Orders

According a report from Reuters,  South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering believes a loss of nuclear capacity in Japan will further boost a nascent recovery in liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship orders. Daewoo shares have risen more than 8% since the March 11 earthquake as Japan's anticipated increase in demand brews hopes for rising LNG ship orders, say analysts, while the overall market has risen 6% percent in the same period. Daewoo Gets Container Ship Order

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. said on won a $592.3m container ship order from an Asian shipper. The vessel will be delivered to the company by the end of July 2011, Daewoo said in a filing with the Korea Exchange. Source: Reuters

China Ship Building Looks Up

88 medium-size and large shipbuilding enterprises in China realized an aggregate gross industrial output value of RMB 163.0 billion ($26.3 billion) during the January-May period this year, up 5.5 percent year on year, says China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI). The aggregate shipbuilding output in China amounted to 15.48 million deadweight tons (dwt), up 18.9 percent year on year. In the given period, the shipbuilding enterprises recorded an aggregate export value of RMB 68.0 billion ($10.97 billion), up 3.7 percent year on year.

S. Korean Shipyards Forecast to Win Most LNG Carrier Orders

South Korean shipbuilders are expected to win the bulk of global orders for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers this year thanks to their capabilities to build such ships, industry sources said Wednesday. The country's three shipbuilders -- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Samsung Heavy Industries Co. and STX Shipbuilding Co.-- have clinched the world's 12 LNG ship orders placed this year, they said. Samsung Heavy Industries has received orders for six LNG carriers so far this year, followed by Daewoo with five orders and STX with one. About 40 to 60 LNG ships are expected to be ordered worldwide this year by countries such as Nigeria, Angola, Spain and Australia, according to the sources.

Japan Shipbuilding Orders Drop

Japanese export ship orders fell 8.5 percent in June from a year earlier, reveal figures by the Japan Ship Exporters’ Association (JSEA). Japanese export ship orders fell 8.5 percent in June from a year earlier to 499,370 gross tons, according to figures released by the Japan Ship Exporters’ Association (JSEA). The 8.5 percent decline in June was the third straight monthly drop year on year and was significantly slower than the 43.5 percent drop in April and 44.6 percent in May, reports 'Malaya Business Insight'. Industry watchers attribute the decline to shrinking demand for new vessels from shipowners, coupled with growing competition from shipyards in South Korea and China.

HHI Reports Surge in Shipbuilding Orders

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Group said it has won 62 new ship orders worth $3.8 billion for January-May period this year, a 500 percent increase for the comparable period last year when it received 12 ship orders worth $1 billion. In May alone, HHI Group netted 20 ships worth $1.3 billion, and the total number and value of ships HHI Group won in May can be increased to 29 ships and $1.9 billion if all the options the group has are to be exercised. Daewoo Wins Ship Orders

Beleagured Daewoo Heavy Industries won $230 million in ship orders from Companies in Hong Kong and Europe. Daewoo reported earned an order to build a bulk carrier from Hong Kong's Tai Chong Cheang Co. Ltd. and two bulk carriers from Oak Maritime Inc. Norway's Bergesen d.y. Group ASA is reported to have given Daewoo an order for one mineral carrier and Belgium's Bocimar N.V. an order for two bulk carriers. The orders tallied at $120 million. Daewoo said it planned to deliver the ships by June 2002.

Korean Ship Orders Up 322%

Korean Ship Orders Up 322% New orders received by South Korean shipbuilders in February totaled 1.26 million gt, up 322.7 percent from the same month a year earlier, provisional figures from the Korea Shipbuilders' Association showed. Orders received in January-February period totaled 2.32 million gt for 37 ships, up 232.1 percent from the same period a year ago. Korea received orders for 21 new ships in February. Ten ships, totaling 718,000 gt, were completed during the month. A total of 27 ships, worth 1.67 million gt, were completed in the first two months of this year, down from 1.93 million GT for 35 ships in the same period a year ago.

Daewoo Wins $483M In Ship Orders

Daewoo Heavy Industries won $483 million in ship orders last week from companies in the U.S. and Greece. It will build four ultra large crude oil carriers for Majestic Shipping Co. of the U.S., and three very large crude oil carriers for Aeolos Management S.A. and Atlantic Bulk Carrier Ltd of Greece, a company statement said. Majestic ordered two 450,000-ton ultra crude oil carriers and took options on two more. Atlantic Bulk ordered two 75,000-ton bulk carriers and Aeolos Management bought one 300,000-ton very large crude oil carrier, Kim said. The ships are to be delivered by the end of 2002.

S. Korea Ship Orders Fall 46%

New ship orders for world market share leading South Korea, dipped 46% in 1Q 2002, according to government sources. New orders amounted to 917,000 cgt for 21 vessels (approximately $1.4 billion) down from 1.7 million CGTs for 55 ships (approx. $2.7 billion) in the same period last year. Some South Korean forecasts indicate that orders for new ships could be down between 14 and 22 percent in 2002, due mainly to the still recovering global economy and the unusually high level of new construction of new shipbuilding activity from years past.

Schat-Harding to Supply for Chantiers Cruise Ship Order

Schat-Harding has been chosen to supply the lifeboats, tenders and davits for reportedly, the largest ever cruise ship order to be placed at France's Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard. Schat-Harding will supply six CTL38 tenders, 20 MPC32 150 person lifeboats and 2 MCB24 combined life / rescue boats and davits to the two vessels, ordered by MSC Cruises. The 333 m long vessels will carry 3,887 passengers and more than 1,300 crew members. The first ship will be delivered in spring 2008 and the second in spring 2009.

Wagenborg Shipping Orders Wärtsilä 46F Engines

The Dutch shipowner Wagenborg Shipping ordered two Wärtsilä 46F engines in April for a new feeder containership being built by IHC Holland Dredger BV at the Kinderdijk shipyard in the Netherlands. On its completion in mid-2006, the vessel will operate in the northern European waters. In addition to the two common-rail main engines Wärtsilä will also supply the propeller for the vessel. Introduced in autumn 2004, the Wärtsilä 46F is the latest medium-speed marine engine developed by Wärtsilä. Its main components and systems represent the best-in-class technology, offering high efficiency and record-low emissions regardless of the fuel quality.

$67M Containership Order Logged

South Korea's Hyundai Merchant Marine placed a $67 million order for a containership with Heavy Industries. Hyundai Merchant said it had borrowed funds from foreign financial institutions at LIBOR plus one percent for the 5,700 TEU-sized order. The shipping and trading company, a unit of Hyundai Group, said the containership would serve Asia-Europe routes from 2003. It said it would also place more ship orders in the second half of this year, including two 4,700 TEU container ships.- (Reuters)

STX Raises Target

STX Group, of which STX Shipbuilding Co. is an affiliate, has almost doubled its ship order target to $10 billion according to a report on Bloomsberg. This news is reported on the heels of a report that Daewoo Shipbuilding’s projections for 2007 has soared nearly 55%, from $11 to $17B. The previous order target for the year for STX had been $5.3 billion. The main driver for the dramatic rise: increasing orders for high-valued ships such as large containerships and VLCCs, according to the report. (Source: Bloomberg)

Cargo Ship Launched

On February 25, the Ben Kien Shipbuilding Industry Company successfully launched the Grace Casablanca cargo ship of 8,700 ton. This is the first of four 8,700 ton ships ordered by Kanematsu group of Japan. The ships, designed by Japan’s AZ company, are 111.8 metres long, 18.6 metres wide, 9.65 metres high. The main engine of 3,120 kW is supplied by Mitsubishi. The company will continue its efforts to finish construction of the ship and start building the remaining three ships as ordered. South Korea is Number One

According to a report from the Kyodo news service, the combined tonnage for ship orders received by South Korean shipbuilders was higher than that of Japanese shipbuilders in 2002. The Shipbuilders' Association of Japan reported that Japanese shipbuilders received orders worth a combined 5.9 million tons in the year, down 25.9% from 2001. South Korean shipbuilders reportedly received orders for a combined 7.59 million tons, up 18.4%, according to data from the Korea Shipbuilding Industry Association. In 2001, Japan was the top shipbuilder based on tonnage.
