Rendell Announces Investment in Southport

Governor Edward G. Rendell announced the investment of up to $25 million dollars in commonwealth capital funds to advance the Southport Marine Terminal project at the Port of Philadelphia. The investment will fund pre-construction activities critical to the project's success. Teams qualified to bid for the right to develop and operate the Southport terminal were notified earlier today that the competitive bid process has been temporarily suspended to allow capital and financial market conditions to improve. Two Finalist Proposals for New Port of Philadelphia Terminal

Less than three months after seeking proposals from interested parties to design, operate and maintain a major new marine terminal in South Philadelphia, Governor Edward G. Rendell announced on July 23 the shortlist of teams that will continue in the solicitation process developing a public-private partnership that is expected to bring millions of dollars of investment to the region. One of the teams selected was a consortium comprising Delaware River Stevedores (DRS) and Hyundai Merchant Marine America (HMMA). DRS is a joint venture between Carrix Inc., and Ports America Group, the two largest independent terminal operating companies in the United States. DRS has vast stevedoring experience at several major U.S. ports, including the Port of Philadelphia.

Crowley Relocates Within Port Everglades

Crowley Liner Services, the first tenant in Port Everglades developing Southport Container Complex and the largest container volume producer, has agreed to reconfigure its leasehold, a move that is strategically beneficial for both Crowley and Port Everglades. The Broward County Board of County Commissioners has approved a recommendation by the Port Everglades Department to relocate a portion of the current leasehold to the south of Crowley’s current terminal. This action makes a prime parcel of dockside land available for leasing to container businesses through a competitive bidding process already underway. The Port received six responses to its Request for Letters of Interest for a new Southport Marine Terminal Operator.

MSC to Lease New Marine Terminal at Port Everglades

An appointed selection committee unanimously chose Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) to negotiate a lease and operating agreement for a 36-acre dockside container terminal at Broward County’s Port Everglades. Final approval is subject to consent from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the governing authority for Port Everglades. This terminal is expected to generate approximately one-million tons of cargo annually with two weekly services at Port Everglades, according to MSC officials. MSC, of Geneva, Switzerland is a privately owned shipping line, founded in 1970. The company has grown rapidly to become one of the leading global shipping lines.

Weeks Marine Takes Delivery of Hopper Dredge Magdalen

Weeks Marine’s new self-propelled hopper dredge, Magdalen, was delivered by Eastern Shipbuilding on December 22 following sea trials and regulatory inspections. The newbuild is one of the two newest, and among the largest hopper dredges in the U.S., and will bring formidable pumping power to offload beach quality sand or other materials for land reclamation. On December 28, the new dredger sailed from Eastern's Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. on her maiden voyage to the East Coast.

Halter Marine to Build Ferries for State Transportation Department

A $10.7 million contract was awarded to Halter Marine Group for construction of two passenger ferries for North Carolina's Department of Transportation. The 180 ft. ferries, being built at Halter's shipyard in Moss Point Marine are scheduled for delivery to Havelock, N.C. in March 2000 and Southport, N.C. in July 2000. Two Caterpillar 3412 diesel engines will power the ferries with a minimum of 475 hp at 1,200 rpm. The all-steel, three-deck ferries can hold up to 300 passengers and 40 cars and trucks complete with a full range of communications and navigational equipment that will assist with steering and mooring. Known as a provider of design, construction and repair for offshore vessels and drilling rigs, Halter has built ferries for shipyards both in the U.S. and abroad.

5 Boaters Recued near Holden Beach by USCG & Agents

Coast Guard and partner agencies rescued five boaters Saturday after their boat capsized in Lockwoods Folley Inlet near Holden Beach, North Carolina. Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders received notification from a good Samaritan reporting a disabled vessel at anchor within the inlet had capsized. Sector watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and dispatched a crew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Oak Island. The RB-S crew arrived on scene at approximately 8:30 a.m. and rescued four of the five boaters.

NC Ferry Runs Aground, Multiple Injuries Reported

The U.S. Coast Guard and partner agencies are responding to a ferry grounding which reportedly caused multiple injuries after the Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure ran aground Tuesday in the vicinity of Battery Island near Southport, N.C. The crew of the Adventure, a 64-foot ferry, contacted Coast Guard Station Oak Island watchstanders via VHF-FM channel 16 at approximately 9 a.m., reporting they ran aground and passengers aboard were in need of medical assistance. Port Everglades Strengthens Cargo Connections

Broward County's Port Everglades has partnered with public and private entities on several multimillion-dollar landside infrastructure improvements designed to improve connections with South Florida's major highway and railroad systems. "Landside congestion plagues many seaports, but Port Everglades is fortunate to have direct interstate highway access and a strong partnership with the Florida East Coast Railway and the State of Florida that keeps commerce on the move," said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Steven M.

Philadelphia Port Development Plan

A plan is underway to develop the Port of Philadelphia into a major best-in-class East Coast container facility with the potential of employing some 175,000 people and handling more than 3.5 million containers annually. Two major American terminal operators and an investment firm have already expressed interest in developing and operating container handling facilities under the new port development plan. However, the entire development is being jeopardized by the proposed relocation of a 1,100-employee Food Distribution Center (FDC) on prime waterfront real estate. Maritime and port interests are lobbying politicians and the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority to relocate the FDC away from the area.

USCG, Paramedic Assist Man off Cape Fear

Coast Guard Oak Island crew members and a Brunswick County paramedic came to the aid of an ailing man Wednesday aboard a charter fishing vessel approximately 15 miles southeast of the Cape Fear River entrance. Personnel at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received notification from the 25-foot charter vessel with five people on board Wednesday about noon stating a 35-year-old male passenger with heart problems was in and out of consciousness approximately 28 miles southeast of the Cape Fear River entrance.

Crowley Liner Services is expanding at Port Everglades with a new 10-year terminal lease that calls for additional acreage and increased container guarantees. "Crowley Liner Services is a success story for the Southport area, which was expanded in 1997 when Broward County purchased additional acreage for container handling," said Port Everglades Director Phil Allen. Port Everglades to Receive $16.5M in State Funds

The Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development (FSTED) Council approved $16.5 million in allocations to Port Everglades to lengthen a cruise berth and to extend the port’s Southport Turning Notch to allow for more cargo berths. These allocations, which were approved under two different state funding sources, will become part of the Florida Department of Transportation  (FDOT) 2014/15 Work Program that comes before the Florida Legislature for approval this next legislative session.

Broward County's Port Everglades exceeded one-million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units, the industry's standard container measurement), for the third consecutive year, reporting a total of almost 1.04 million TEUs and maintaining its status as Florida's number one container port, according to preliminary data for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2016. Compared to the prior fiscal year 2015, total TEUs were down by 2 percent from 1.06 million, which Port officials attribute to market fluctuations.

Queensland Turns Down Cruise Terminal Request

Australia's Queensland government has backed away from controversial plans to allow a cruise ship terminal to be built on state-owned land on the Gold Coast, according to the 'Brisbane Times'. Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney announced on Tuesday that in response to community concerns, vacant land at Doug Jennings Park and parts of the Southport Spit would not be made available to Chinese property company ASF Consortium as part of its application for an integrated development licence. The company plans to build a mega-resort on the Broadwater, which would include a casino and cruise ship terminal. However, Brisbane Times reports that Mr Seeney said ASF Consortium has updated its concept plan to relocate the cruise ship terminal from The Spit to Wave Break Island.

New Navy Contract

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd., Gyeongnam, Korea, is being awarded a $9,577,300 modification under a previously awarded firm-fixed-price contract (N62470-10-C-8009) to exercise Option 1 which provides for the procurement of second ship-to-shore container cranes for Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point wharf. The work to be performed provides for fabrication of ship-to-shore container cranes used in container handling operations to load and off load ships and other vessels. The cranes are manufactured in different sizes and varying capabilities. The total contract amount after exercising this option will be $27,500,000. Crane manufacturing work will be performed in Changwon, Korea, and crane installation and utilization will be performed in Southport, N.C.

The Edmund Fitzgerald Still a Mystery After 35 Years

On November 10, 1975, in the most famous shipwreck in Great Lakes history, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a treacherous storm on Lake Superior. Now in conjunction with its anniversary of the ship sinking, Southport Video Productions, a film company specializing in documentaries on shipwrecks and lighthouses, has released a program titled The Edmund Fitzgerald Controversy. “This is by far our most detailed and comprehensive look at this great ship’s story,” said Southport producer Mark C. Gumbinger of www.edmundfitzgerald.com, who produced and directed three earlier entries on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Thanks to the popular 1976 song by singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald has reached and maintained legendary status in Great Lakes maritime lore.

Gladding-Hearn Delivers Cape Fear Pilot Boat

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, The Duclos Corporation, has delivered a new pilot boat, Cape Fear Pilot II, to the Wilmington-Cape Fear Pilots Association. The new launch, which shuttles pilots nine miles from Southport, N.C. to ships entering the Cape Fear River en route to the port of Wilmington, works alongside another pilot boat built by the Somerset, Mass. yard in 1974. Measuring 52 ft. (15.8 m), the all-aluminum boat was designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates of Boston and Gladding Hearn. It has a 17 ft. (5.1 m) beam and draws 5 ft. (1.5 m). Powered by twin Caterpillar diesel engines, each rated for 480 bhp at 2,100 rpm for a top speed of 24 knots, the engines turn the five-blade Hall & Stavaert bronze propellers via Twin Disc reverse/reduction gears.

SUNY Maritime College Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner

State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College’s annual Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner will be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, on the College’s Throgs Neck, Bronx, New York campus. The event will begin at 6:00 pm with a cocktail hour, followed by the awards dinner at 7 pm in Vander Clute Hall. During the Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner, SUNY Maritime College will salute two Maritime graduates, Mark Barker, president, The Interlake Steamship Company, Cleveland, Ohio as well asThomas Merrell, president, General Dynamics, American Overseas Marine (AMSEA), in Quincy, Mass. The chemical tanker owner, BLT Chembulk Group  headquartered in Southport, Conn., will also be honored that evening.

Philadelphia Maritime Interests File Lawsuit

The Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania has granted a request for an expedited hearing requested by major maritime interests in the Delaware River area in a lawsuit questioning the jurisdiction of the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority. The hearing, scheduled presently for October 3, 2007, is based on a complaint filed by the International Longshoremen's Association District Council of Philadelphia and Wilmington (DE), the Philadelphia Marine Trade Association (PMTA) and the Maritime Stakeholders Group (MSG). The three organizations, which collectively represent more than 300 maritime-related entities, claim that the PRPA is overstepping its jurisdiction by preparing to convey maritime land to a non-maritime related use.

Update: Bald Head Island Ferry Salvage

The U.S. Coast Guard is monitoring salvage attempts Wednesday of the Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure, which ran aground Tuesday in the vicinity of Battery Island near Southport, N.C. Personnel from Bald Head Island Transportation attempted to refloat the Adventure at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday during high tide without success. The owner of Bald Head Island Transportation is working to submit a salvage plan of the Adventure for Coast Guard approval before any additional action is taken.

GE Ships LM2500 Marine Gas Turbine for US Navy

GE's Marine Solutions division said it has shipped a LM2500 marine gas turbine propulsion module that will help power the U.S. Navy's 75th DDG Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125).
