CSIC Begins Building Shipbuilding Facility
XFN reported that China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC) has started construction on two new drydocks in the eastern city of Qingdao, with a projected total investment of 7.4 bln yuan. The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) said in a statement on its website that construction on the new docks is scheduled to be completed by April 2009. The facilities, which will have combined annual capacity of two mln deadweight tons (dwt), will be able to build very large crude carriers (VLCCs), bulk cargo vessels and container ships with capacity up to 8,000 TEUs.
AHI Starts Work On Drydock
Keppel Corp Ltd. unit Arab Heavy Industries (AHI) has started construction on its first drydock, valued at $19.1 million. "The number of ports in the Arabian Gulf is increasing and with AHI in the heart of United Arab Emirates, the business hub of the Middle East, this strategic investment will position our company as the premiere medium-sized yard in the region," Obaid Ali Al Muhairi, AHI's chairman said. AHI is a joint stock company of the government of Ajman, the Al Futtaim Group, the Keppel Group and other investors.
PRISCO Starts Construction of Gas Carrier
Construction of a gas carrier for MOL/K Line/PRISCO began at Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding in the city of Chiba, Japan. Currently underway is the assembly of the ship's hull and the manifold as well as the assembly of gas tanks having complicated technical structure. Arctic Patrol Ships to be Ordered
A federal cabinet committee has okayed a plan to build six corvette-sized Arctic patrol vessels, according to a report by The Canadian Press and posted on www.canada.com. The committee approved the plan to build the 100-m, 6,000-ton, according to several sources, The Canadia Press reported. It is anticipated that the ships – which will start construction following a two-year period in which the shipbuilding project will be planned – will cost about $300m per ship.

NASSCO Starts Building 3rd SEA-Vista Tanker
Ceremony signals the start of construction for the third SEA-Vista ECO Tanker to be constructed at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. U.S. shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO signaled the start construction today for the third product tanker to be built for SEA-Vista Newbuild II LLC, a subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings, Inc. Azimut Planing-Megayacht Under Construction
Azimut starts construction on 42-meter triple-deck planing megayacht Azimut Yachts announced the start of construction of their 42-meter planing megayacht. The largest of the line the new model include accommodation for twelve guests in five cabins as well crew size of ten. Technically, she will have a top speed in the region of 22-knots with cruising at 17-knots. All to be made possible via her intended twin MTU 16V 4000 M93L engines. Sailing conservatively at 12-knots or less, the Azimut Grande 42-meter will have a range of 1,200 nautical miles or more.
Third Damen Stan Patrol for Mexican Navy
The Mexican Navy contracted Damen Shipyards Group for the design and material package of a Damen Stan Patrol 4207, including technical assistance. Construction of the vessel will start in the summer of 2013 at ASTIMAR 1 (Tampico), one of the five naval shipyards of Astilleros de la Secretaría de Marina. The vessels are designed to perform patrolduties in designated areas. Other clients who operate similar vessels in the region include navies and coast guards of Jamaica, Barbados, the Dutch Caribbean, Honduras and the Canadian Coast Guard.
General Dynamics NASSCO Starts Construction of Seventh T-AKE Ship
General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), recently laid the keel for the seventh dry cargo-ammunition ship in the U.S. Navy’s T-AKE program and started construction of the eighth ship this week. Both ships will be delivered to the Navy in 2009. The keel of T-AKE 7 was laid on November 2, while construction of T-AKE 8 began on October 31. Recently, NASSCO launched USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE 5) and successfully completed sea trials for USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4). Since June 2006, NASSCO has delivered three T-AKE ships to the Navy, and will soon deliver the Richard E. Byrd. The shipyard has contracts to build the first nine ships of the T-AKE class and recently reached an agreement to terms for ships 10 through 14.
General Dynamics NASSCO Starts Construction of Seventh T-AKE Ship
General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics announced the start of construction on the seventh dry cargo-ammunition ship in the U.S. Navy's T-AKE program. The ship is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the first quarter of 2009. Since June 2006, NASSCO has delivered USNS Lewis and Clark (T-AKE 1) and USNS Sacagawea (T-AKE 2) to the Navy. The third ship of the class, USNS Alan Shepard, and the recently-launched USNS Richard E. Byrd will also be delivered to the Navy by the end of 2007. The T-AKE class is expected to include 11 ships for the Military Sealift Command fleet.
Goodearth Maritime to Build Shipyard
According to reports, Goodearth Maritime is planning to build a shipyard on the east coast of the country with Korea Maritime Consultants Limited (Komac). The first phase of the project is expected to cost about $250 million, and will see tankers as large as 100,000 deadweight tons being built. Phase two will accommodate supertanker orders and the new yard could build up to 12 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) a year, reports said. The yard, along with Komac, a private South Korean company of naval architects and marine engineers -- which is expected to build tankers, bulk vessels and chemical carriers -- is slated to start construction in about 15 months.
Port Commission Selects Vitol for Fuel Tank Farm
Negotiations are under way between the Canaveral Port Authority and international petroleum firm Vitol S.A. Inc. to build and operate a major fuel storage terminal and pipeline on a 30-acre site on the north side of Port Canaveral. The $120 million project will serve the shipping industry as well as boost oil and gasoline supplies in Central Florida with the construction of a 50-mile fuel pipeline from Port Canaveral to Orlando International Airport. Vitol has fuel distribution, terminal and refinery operations in a number of countries. Upon completion of a detailed marketing plan and long-term lease negotiations, the company hopes to start construction at Port Canaveral by the middle of next year.
Gladding-Hearn Starts Construction of Fourth NY Water Taxi
Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has started construction of a fourth water taxi for New York City-based New York Water Taxi. Delivery is set for next April when the commuter ferry will begin passenger service between Yonkers, N.Y., and downtown Manhattan. Like the three sisters before her, the bright yellow, all-aluminum catamaran, designed by Incat Crowther, will measure 72 feet (22 m) long and 27.3 feet (8.3 m) abeam, and draw 5 feet (1.5 m). It will be USCG-certified to carry 149 passengers but limited to only 99 passengers when operating at New York City water taxi docks. The vessel will be powered by two Cummins QSK 19-M diesel engines, each rated at 800 Bhp at 2100 rpm.
TransCanada Says Petronas LNG Project Plans to Go Ahead
TransCanada Corp said on Friday a consortium led by Malaysian national oil company Petronas has decided to proceed with plans to build a terminal in northern British Columbia to export Canadian natural gas to Asia. TransCanada said it plans to start construction this year of the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission line, to connect the Montney field near Fort St. John, British Columbia, to the PNW LNG terminal at Lelu Island, near Prince Rupert. The final decision on the line will be confirmed by the partners of PNW LNG after receiving approvals from the British Columbia and Canadian governments, TransCanada said. TransCanada said it planned to put the 900-km (560-mile) into service by 2019-20.
Vinashin Lines Signs Contracts
According to reports, the Vinashin Lines Ltd Co, a subsidiary of Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), signed two major shipbuilding contracts this week in Hai Phong. Under the first contract, the Ha Long Shipyard will build one 54,000-tonne ship, 190m long, 32.4m wide and 17.8m high, and with 9,480 horsepower, capable of running at 14 knots. Matching the largest ships yet built in Vietnam, the 54,000-ton vessel will be built at a cost of about $30m. New Icebreaker Could Keep Northern Sea Route Open
Russia's Baltic Shipyard starts construction of the first LK-60 nuclear-powered icebreaker. The LK-60 will be the largest and most powerful icebreaker ever built, making commercial traffic along the Northern Sea Route possible all year around. According to Barents Observer, Russia will have a large demand for new nuclear-powered icebreakers in the near future. Of the existing six vessels that are operating in Arctic waters today only one will be operational by 2020. The three new icebreakers will cost Russia a total of 51,8 billion rubles (app €1,3 billion).

Wärtsilä's Russian JV to Build Engine Production Facility
Wärtsilä TMH Diesel Engine Company LLC, a joint venture owned 50/50 by Wärtsilä and Transmashholding (TMH), is ready to start construction of a modern factory located in Penza, Russia. The new plant, which is expected to be ready to start production in summer 2013, will provide world-class assembly and manufacturing facilities. Wärtsilä and Transmashholding signed the joint venture agreement in May 2010. The intention is to manufacture modern and multi-purpose diesel engines, including a technically advanced version of the Wärtsilä 20 engine, in Russia.
JHSV 2: Austal Starts Construction
Less than one year after beginning fabrication of Spearhead (JHSV 1), Austal has commenced construction on Vigilant (JHSV 2), the second of up to ten 103-m Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV). Austal was selected as prime contractor in November 2008 to design and build the first JHSV, with options for nine additional vessels expected to be exercised between FY09 and FY13.
