Teekay Offshore Partners L.P. announced that Ian Craig has accepted an invitation to join Teekay Offshore's Board of Directors, effective June 6, 2017. Craig has served in various executive positions in Shell, most recently in Nigeria where he was Executive Vice President for Sub-Saharan Africa, and in Russia where he was CEO of Sakhalin Energy, an incorporated joint venture of Gazprom, Shell, Mitsui and Mitsubishi. Prior to that, Craig was a Board member and Technical Director of Enterprise Oil plc until its acquisition by Shell in 2002. He had earlier held executive and management positions with other exploration and production (E&P) companies including Sun Oil and BP.

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy students, officers, and crew will visit Mediterranean ports this spring as part of the college’s annual two-month training cruise to foreign and domestic ports-of-call. This year’s training cruise itinerary includes Norfolk, Va., May 6- 9; Valetta, Malta, May 25- 28; Civitavecchia, Italy, May 31- June 3; Cobh, Ireland, June 12- June 15; Portland, Maine, June 25-26. Arlington Tankers Ltd. announced that Concordia Maritime AB of Sweden (Concordia) has entered into new two-year sub-charter agreements for Arlington's two V-Max tankers, the Stena Vision and Stena Victory. Concordia is the current time charterer for both vessels through 2009. The vessels are currently sub-chartered to Sun Oil International (Sun). The sub-charters with Sun are due to expire during 2007. The new sub-charter agreements are with Litasco, a subsidiary of the Russian energy company LukOil OAO, and will commence immediately upon expiration of the sub-charters with Sun and continue for a two-year term. The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) and the Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI), announced that MITAGS/PMI have been contracted to provide ship modeling for three major pilot groups. The Pilots’ Association for the Bay and River Delaware has contracted MITAGS/PMI to develop a hydrodynamic model of the “Stena Vision Class” Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC), including a simulated visual database for the entrance of the Delaware River to Sun Oil Dock near the Philadelphia Shipyards. The model and database are an integrated part of a comprehensive training program that has been created for all new Delaware Pilots for each class of vessel. The course will also cover advanced control systems, such as Azipod and Kamewa.

South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries launched its first V-Max VLCC or very large crude carrier at its Ulsan shipyard on Thursday. The V-Max is designed with features to improve existing tanker safety and to offload directly into ports with shallow anchorages. Concordia Maritime, an affiliate of Sweden's shipping conglomerate Stena, financed the project, known by the name Stena V-Max, based on an initial three-year charter from U.S. independent refiner Sun Oil. The president of Sweden's Concordia Maritime said his company expected to take delivery of a second V-Max VLCC from Hyundai Heavy in July. Hyundai was awarded the order three years ago to construct the world's first two Stena V-Max VLCCs, which are designed for a 30-40 year life span.

Independent Spanish shipbuilder Hijos de J Barreras has again showed its mettle by delivering two specialized vessels within the space of just a few days, and by landing a three-ship contract to take its orderbook into mid 2003. Three years after being spun-off from the former Astilleros Espanoles (AESA), the Vigo yard demonstrates how a well-managed and motivated undertaking can successfully make the transition into private control. It provides a template for broader Spanish endeavors to slim the state's holding in a number of industrial sectors, not only shipbuilding. Barreras always displayed something of an independent style within AESA (now IZAR), of which it was part for nearly a quarter-century.
