Navy Fleet Survey Team Receives New Boats
Fleet Survey Team (FST) took delivery of two 9-m SAFE Boat Defender-class survey boats on March 4. This delivery triples FST's organic boat inventory of C 130-deployable platforms. "These boats usher in a new and exciting era of FST surveying that will undoubtedly provide critical hydrographic information to the fleet for many years to come," said FST Commanding Officer Cmdr. Brian Connon. Prior to the delivery of the two Defender-class boats, FST primarily relied on its current lone FST 7-m rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) or boats of opportunity for conducting hydrographic surveys using single-beam sonar from Africa to . The Defender-class boats offer many advantages over previous survey boats and vessels of opportunity used in overseas surveys.
NOAA Orders Newbuild Navigation Response Boats
NOAA today announced that Lake Assault Boats of Superior, Wisconsin, will build two small vessels for the Office of Coast Survey's navigation response program, part of a plan to eventually replace all six of the program's small survey boats. The combined cost of both 28-foot vessels is $538,200. "All of the navigation response team survey boats are nearing or have exceeded their designed service life," said Russ Proctor, division chief of Coast Survey's Navigation Services Division.
USACE Wilmington Christen New Survey Boat
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Wilmington District name new survey boat 'Swart' at the engineer repair yard. The boat is named after Dirk Swart III (1935-2011) who served as captain and operator of District survey vessel Gillette from 1971 to his retirement in 2002 at the age of 76. Swart was not only the senior survey boat skipper, but he was also the last veteran of World War II to retire from the Wilmington District. "The Swart, which replaced the aging Gillette, is state-of-the-art," said Wilmington District Commander Col. Steven Baker.

GENSHIP Wins Repair Bid
The General Ship Corporation (GENSHIP), Baltimore, Md., has been awarded the bid to drydock and repair the United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) Survey Boat Shuman. The vessel, which will be delivered from its home port of Philadelphia, will undergo major overhauls or renewals of the propulsion shafting, rudders, port and starboard propellers, as well as other maintenance and repairs.
Silver Ships Delivers Survey Vessel to USACE
Silver Ships delivered a 48-ft. Endeavor Survey boat to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. The vessel will be tasked with surveying the waters in both the Gulf of Mexico and rivers of the New Orleans District. The all-welded aluminum vessel is designed and engineered by Naval Architect Lou Codega, PE of Smithfield, VA and features a hull form designed to handle the short choppy seas of the Gulf Coast regions. The vessel is powered by twin Caterpillar C18 diesel engines at 803 hp each coupled to Twin Disc v-drive gears.
New Blyth Workcat for Baltic Survey Work
Finnish survey company FCG (Finnish Consulting Group) Ltd. has placed an order for a new GRP survey boat from Blyth Workcats Ltd of Canvey Island, U.K. The 14-meter catamaran will be known as the Nordic Sonar and it is now being built to meet the specialized needs of the FCG survey teams. It will be based in Turku, Finland and is being fitted with comprehensive heating system and insulation suitable for its use in the demanding conditions around the Finnish coast and the northern Baltic.
Norsafe AS Workboat Completes Sea Trials
Norsafe AS reported exceptional bollard pull and low speed thrust using twin UltraJet 305HT waterjets coupled to twin Yanmar 340 bhp 6LYA-STP engines. The survey boat Munin is designed and tested according to the "Nordic boat standard" for workboats. During sea trials a speed of 30 knots with a displacement of 8 tonnes was comfortably achieved and a bollard pull of 2.8 tonne was recorded. According to Norsafe, the workboat has excellent reliability, maneuverability, and sea keeping abilities, making it suitable as a work platform for maintenance on seismic cables. In addition, Munin is designed to operate away from the Mother Ship for extended periods, with a sufficient range for long time operation. The boat is equipped with a spacious wheelhouse with seating for a crew of four.
Tuco to Build Hydrographic Survey Boats for Denmark
Tuco Marine Group said it has signed a contract with DALO (The Danish Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization) to deliver two bespoke hydrographic survey boats to replace two existing survey vessels that have become obsolete. The new vessels, based on Tuco’s ProZero concept, have been designed to allow full use of the latest technology for hydrographic surveys. Munson Delivers Landing Craft to USCG
William E. Munson Co. of Mount Vernon, Wash., which specializes in high performance for welded aluminum landing craft from 18 to 40 ft., built five new 34 x 12 ft. Packman tenders for the USCGC Healy, Polar Sea, and Polar Star. Four of the five vessels delivered were Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP) replacements. Each LCVP was outfitted with a 6 sq. ft. enclosed cabin, diesel cabin heater, four-way picking eyes, and flip-out dive ladder. The remaining 34 ft. Packman delivered was designed as an Artic Survey Boat (ASB). The ASB was outfitted with a 10 x 12 ft. enclosed cabin. Power is provided by twin 230 hp Volvo KAD43-DP diesel inboard-outboards.

KMI Leasing Co., LLC recently added a new 30-ft. Rapid Response Skimmer – Wide version outfitted with a Kvichak/Marco Filterbelt oil recovery module to their lease fleet. All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) was recently awarded a contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for the design and construction of a new hydrofoil supported aluminum catamaran survey vessel. The vessel will primarily perform survey missions and some dive operations in support of dredging work planned within the Corps’ Philadelphia District. USACE has designated that the new catamaran will replace the aging survey boat, Shuman, which currently fills the mission critical role. The 68’ x 26’ custom aluminum catamaran will be designed by Teknicraft Design, Ltd.

Viking Welding - EPA Survey Boat
In October 2008, Viking Welding of Kensington, NH delivered a 26.5 ft trailerable survey boat to the EPA’s Narragansett Laboratory. After performing nearly a year of pre-bid research and specification writing, the EPA ultimately awarded the contract to Viking Welding. Blyth Workcats Delivers Aqualink
The first two-deck boat ever built by Blyth Workcats has recently been delivered to a customer in Belgium. The 18-meter Aqualink is the first Blyth Workcat to feature a high bridge and it has now entered service with Ostend Marine Services for which it has been designed to undertake a wide range marine operations. These include work as a charter survey vessel while also being equipped with an Ocean 3 bow fender and wide foredeck that enable it to undertake crew transfer and cargo delivery to offshore wind farms.

CEO, Matthew Mullett, acquires complete control of All American Marine from founder partner Pat Pitsch. Mullett joined AAM as CEO in 1999 and has served as the managing partner of the shipyard since he became co-owner in 2003. SeaArk Delivers Survey Boats to Corps of Engineers
SeaArk Marine, Inc. recently delivered two 2610 survey boats to the Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District. The vessels are assigned to Pleasant Valley, Iowa and Lock and Dam 18 in Gladstone, Ill. The vessels are powered by twin Mercury Optimax, 225 hp outboard engines with side mounted dual controls and hydraulic trim tabs. These vessels can easily attain a top speed in excess of 34kts fully manned. All enclosed cabin spaces are fully insulated, air conditioned and heated.
Offshore Surveyor Training: Kongsberg's New Workboat
Kongsberg Maritime says it has introduced a series of new on-water training courses for offshore surveyors and survey engineers following the launch of its own chartered vessel, 'True North'. The vessel will enable Kongsberg Maritime Ltd to introduce a practical element to the courses already offered at its training centre in Westhill, Aberdeen, on the company's products for the offshore survey industry. True North, which works out of Stonehaven just a few miles from the training centre, will initially support courses on the HiPAP (High Precision Acoustic Positioning) system.
