Cruise ships moored in the Maltese port of Valletta will soon be able to plug into the island's energy grid, drawing the power they require to be fully operative without having to keep their diesel engines running. Nidec ASI, head of the Nidec Industrial Solutions platform belonging to the Nidec Group, said it has secured a  €12 million contract with the Maltese company Excel Sis for the creation of a “shore-to-ship” project at the port. Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) delivered the first ever modern Cable Laying Vessel built for Kokusai Cable Ship Co. Ltd. (KCS) Japan, on June 21, 2019. Once, the stars were all that mariners needed to navigate the seas. Today, maritime companies rely on hi-tech systems to operate and navigate equally hi-tech vessels. All of that comes with new and significant risks. On one side, automation has its benefits, especially as crews grew smaller and ships got bigger. On the flip side, however, marine technology, like most other technology, comes with its own risks. Today’s technologies often require Internet connectivity to function properly. A recent study by Boston-based security company Rapid7 found more than 100,000 devices – from traffic signal equipment to oil and gas monitors – were connected to the Internet using serial ports with inadequate security leaving them vulnerable to breaches or hacking.

The 70-meter Fast Crew Boat (FCB) was christened Muslim Magomayev at a ceremony at the Incat shipyard on Monday, September 15. This is the first vessel that Australian Shipbuilder Incat Tasmania has purpose built for the oil and gas industry. When sea trials are completed the boat will depart later this month to Baku, Azerbaijan. Caspian Marine Services executives and 12 Azerbaijan crew witnessed 10 year old Hilary Clifford, granddaughter of Incat Chairman, Robert Clifford, cut the ribbon releasing the champagne.

On June 14, the HelWin bèta platform left on a barge from the Heerema Fabrication Group's (HFG) yard in Zwijndrecht for Schiedam to complete outstanding work. Last week, HelWin bèta reached its final destination in the German North Sea, where the platform will supply more than half a million households with sustainable energy. That requires high-tech systems. Imtech Marine is responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of the HVAC system, being the heating, ventilation and especially the cooling of all high-quality equipment on the platform.

Irving Shipbuilding announced $28.2 million in additional contract awards to Canadian-based suppliers as part of the Halifax Shipyard Modernization Program, a two-year engineering and construction investment to prepare the company’s facilities to build Canada's future combatant ships. “To date a total value of $175 million in contracts have been awarded as part of our overall investment of approximately $300 million in the Halifax Shipyard Modernization Program” said Kevin McCoy, President, Irving Shipbuilding.

Irving Shipbuilding’s successful C$25 billion bid for the combatant portion of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) illustrates the strength of Nova Scotia shipbuilding industry. Under the program, Irving Shipbuilding, Inc. (ISI) will build six to eight Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships and 15 Canadian Surface Combatants for the Department of National Defense (DND) over the next 20-30 years. Seattle-based Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. has appointed Eric Crumpton as Operations Manager for its fleet of underwater vehicles. Crumpton, who will be based out of Global’s Seattle office, brings over 30 years of ROV operations and manufacturing experience to the job. Prior to joining Global, Crumpton worked for Deep Sea Systems, Oceaneering, Honeywell, Hydro Products and Alliant Techsystems. Crumpton will be responsible for the supervision and management of Global Diving’s ROV operations and related services for all groups within the GD&S family as well as the greater marketplace. The Italian Trade Commission and the Liguria Region are sponsoring an event in La Spezia to facilitate and create collaborations and partnerships between universities, companies, research centers, and other stakeholders in the maritime field. Seafuture, occurring June 11 through 14, is the first exhibition in the Mediterranean area, open both to companies and research centres. It will host engineers, designers, manufacturers and distributors of sea-related equipment and technology. German marine equipment suppliers are staying successful. Surveys of their industry association, the VDMA (German Engineering Federation), resulted in new record figures: in 2007, the sales achieved €11.9 billion with now 76,000 employees, making over 13.8% up on the previous year. The export rate was 73%. The sector could thus maintain and expand its world leading role for high tech systems for shipbuilding. 58% of the German suppliers expect the order inflow in home trading still to increase in 2008, pushed by the still extraordinarily high capacity utilization of the German shipyards. But the effects of the global shipbuilding boom can mainly be seen in the foreign markets.

Jeremiah, U.S. Navy (Ret.) was elected to the Board of Directors of the Company at its annual meeting of shareholders on Friday, September 12, 2003. Admiral Jeremiah is President of Technology Strategies & Alliances Corporation, a strategic advisory and investment banking firm engaged primarily in the aerospace, defense, telecommunications and electronics industries. Prior to his retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1994, he was Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1990 to 1994 and Commander-in-Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet from 1987 to 1990. Admiral Jeremiah serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wackenhut Services, Inc.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a $4 million contract by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) for the development and integration of lithium-ion battery technology for the U.S. Special Operations Force's new Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS). Work on the ASDS battery system is being developed in conjunction with Alliant Techsystems, Inc. of Horsham, Pa. The ASDS, which is a mini-submarine intended to clandestinely carry Navy SEAL teams and their combat gear to and from hostile shores, is designed and built by Northrop Grumman's Oceanic & Naval Systems business unit.
