Ships Benefit from Intelligent Sensors

Tank gauging systems specialist PSM’s new iCT level pressure and temperature sensors are suitable for all ship sizes and types. The requirement for increasing amounts of reliable data on board has driven up demand for sensors. One consequence of larger manufacturing volumes has been that sensors have become relatively inexpensive. However, installation costs are another matter, and continue to rise. Today, the cost of installing a level gauging system either as a new build or a retrofit can often exceed the cost of the equipment itself. This is particularly apparent in respect of cable costs and system commissioning. PSM has launched a new high stability digital level, pressure and temperature sensor with advanced integrated intelligent signal processing and diagnostics.

The Digital Future of Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors

(Image: CMR Group)

CMR Group’s chief technical officer, Patrice Flot, considers the current approach to sensing exhaust gas temperature (EGT) on high horsepower engine platforms and the capabilities provided by new digital technology. An EGT sensor measures the temperature of the engine exhaust gas to prevent damage to critical components such as the after treatment system, turbines and cylinder head exhaust valves. It can also be used inside the combustion chambers where hot gases are generated.

Coatings Put To Test To Keep Ships Cool

Every Sailor who has made a deployment to the Persian Gulf can agree on one thing: it's blistering hot. At least two out of every three Navy ship deployments are made to high-temperature areas. Sustained operations in searing weather increase stress on both equipment and crew. To help lessen the load on shipboard cooling systems, NAVSEA's Corrosion Control Division (SEA 03M) is testing a new derivative of the anti-stain paints already being tested by the Navy — an anti-stain paint that also absorbs fewer of the sun's rays. This special characteristic is known as Low Solar Absorption (LSA). This coating incorporates LSA and anti-stain properties into the standard topside paint formulation, and is applied in the same manner as the old paint system.

CMR Debuts Gas Engine Pressure Regulator

Two Dead in Petrobras Offshore Accident

Two workers died at a construction project at a Brazilian oil terminal operated by state-run Petrobras on Tuesday, adding to a string of fatal and life-threatening accidents, a union representing oil workers said in a statement. The workers drowned after scaffolding they were erecting collapsed at the end of a pier operated by Transpetro, Petrobras' pipeline and shipping unit, the union, known as FUP, said. The pier was at Transpetro's Barra do Riacho Terminal in Espirito Santo state. The employees were wearing security belts even though work authorizations recommended that the employees only use life-jackets, FUP said. Locked to the scaffolding by the belts, they were dragged under water when the scaffolding fell.
