Durban Women Scoop Maritime Awards

Transnet National Port Authority women flew the flag high at the Women in Transport Awards which took place at the Durban ICC on 18 October 2016. The Women in Transport Awards is a collaborative platform co-located with the African Ports Evolution conference and exhibition, and is dedicated to recognising excellence within the rail and maritime industry in Africa. The prestigious awards ceremony was attended by a number of decision makers, business leaders and various stakeholders from the transport and maritime industry, with Deputy Minister of Transport Lydia Sindisiwe Chikunga delivering the keynote address. TNPA’s Sylvia Siyo, who is an acting Ship Repair Manager in the Port of Durban, walked away with the Best Head of Department in Transport award.

Royal IHC Launches Dredger for TNPA

The naming and launch ceremony of the 5,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) ILEMBE took place on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Kinderdijk, The Netherlands. The dredger is being built for Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), the national port authority of South Africa. The ceremony was performed by Lunga Ngcobo, General Manager Corporate Affairs at TNPA. IHC was selected as the supplier after a successful submission into an open tender process for what will be the largest dredging vessel of its kind operating in the country. The contract for the design, construction and delivery of the vessel was signed between TNPA and IHC in March 2014.

Vallihu Named Chief Executive of S. African Ports

South African port authority, Transnet National Ports Authority, has appointed Richard Vallihu as its new Chief Executive, following the retirement of Tau Morwe. Richard Vallihu took up the reins as Chief Executive of South African port authority, Transnet National Ports Authority, on April 1, 2015. He succeeds Tau Morwe, who led the company for a number of years before opting for retirement in March 2015. Vallihu is no stranger to Transnet SOC Ltd, the custodian of South Africa’s freight and logistics sector.

IHC Merwede Secures TSHD Order from TNPA

IHC Merwede has been awarded the contract for the design, construction and delivery of a 5,500m3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) to Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) in South Africa. The company was selected after a successful submission into an open tender process for what will be the largest dredging vessel of its kind operating in the country. The new TSHD will join TNPA’s existing fleet of IHC Merwede-built vessels, which features: the 4,200m3 TSHD ISANDLWANA (ordered in 2008); and the grab hopper dredger ITALENI (ordered in 2013).

South Africa's Transnet Go For Tideland Racons

International specialist in aids to navigation Tideland, and its its South African agent, Marine Data Solutions (Pty) Ltd, has won the contract to supply five SeaBeacon 2 System 6 racons to the South Africa's National Ports Authority, part of Transnet SOC Ltd. The racons will be deployed in various locations around the coast, including the country's six largest ports: Richards Bay, Durban, Saldanha, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London. They will join a large number of Tideland Signal radar beacons already installed in South Africa and other countries all along the African seaboard. Tideland Signal has supplied over 1,000 System 6 racons to customers around the world, one of whom has calculated that cost-of-ownership is less than 5% of the initial investment.

Damen to Build New Boats for Port of Salandha

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) recently awarded Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) preferred bidder status to build a pilot boat and a tug boat for the Port of Saldanha in the Western Cape. The vessels, customized for the South African market, includes a state of the art ship-handling Stan Tug 2006 and a Pilot Cutter 2706. The Port of Saldanha - South Africa's largest natural port with the deepest water – is one of the world's larger iron ore ports, having handled a total of 58.263 million tons of cargo, of which the major share was iron ore for export. With the terminal operating at its maximum, the port is continuing the expansion of its operations to meet the capacity needs ahead of demand.
