Crowley's Sea Victory To Perform Tow
The Crowley Marine Services' tug, Sea Victory will tow the USS New Jersey from Bremerton, Wash. to Philadelphia via the Panama Canal on September 12. The most decorated battleship in U.S. history, having earned 16 battle stars, the tug towed the former USS Missouri to Pearl Harbor last year. Most recently though was the tug's tow of the aircraft carrier the former USS Oriskany on a 15,000 mile journey around South America from Vallejo, Calif to Beaumont, Texas. Towing the 887 ft. (270 m), USS New Jersey at a speed of about 6 knots, the 149 ft. (45.4 m), 7,200-hp Sea Victory is one of the three Crowley tugs of this class. Designed to operate in immense adverse conditions, the tug is suited for ocean towing with a fuel capacity of about 200,000 gallons.
Barge Grounds in Lake Michigan
A tug towing two barges ran into rough seas, grounding one barge, while attempting to find a safe haven. The tug, Holly Ann, owned by Holly Marine in Chicago, was towing two empty barges from Muskegon, Mich., to Chicago when seas increased to 10-12 feet and the captain decided to head for safety. The tug lost propulsion and steering while it was making its way toward the Holland Channel. The tug and first barge drifted to the Lake Michigan contractorsâ€™ dock and tied up on the pier. The second barge hit the pier, which snapped the towline, and grounded at Holland State Beach. There was no pollution or injuries reported and no visible damage to the barges or tug.
Lightering Indonesian Coal
A tug tows a loaded coal barge down the Mahakam River past the city of Samarinda. Passing the town of Samarinda, just above the deltas and about 30 kilometers up river from the sea, a steady parade of tugs towing barges are moving thousands of tons of coal from several large mines further up the river. Some of these tow barge loads of coal to neighboring Southeast Asian nations while others take to coal barges out of the river and alongside deep-sea vessels for transport to more distant markets. Coast Guard Medevacs One, Continues 'Carnival Triumph' Escort
The Coast Guard took off a female passenger from the disabled ship in the Gulf of Mexico under tow to Mobile. A Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat — Medium crew medevaced a female passenger who reportedly suffered a stroke and transported her to Dauphin Island to meet emergency medical services. The tug vessel Resolve Pioneer reported a broken tow line which was restored by the tug Roland Falgout. Meanwhile Coast Guard boarding teams assisted CBP agents with passport verification and disembarkation processing with the ship some six miles south of the entrance to Mobile Bay.
OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design
Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.
Soles Joins Glosten Associates
Peter Soles has joined The Glosten Associates as a Marine Consultant and will be supporting the firm’s ocean engineering and marine logistics projects. “Peter brings a broad knowledge of marine transportation policy, oceangoing vessel management and operation, voyage and cargo logistics, navigation, and tug/towing operations,” said Justin Morgan, PE, Glosten Principal. Prior to joining Glosten, Soles contributed to marine projects throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska for over 13 years as a tug operator and marine operations manager for two local marine transportation companies.
Oregon Tug Captain Rescued After Capsize
A man is in serious condition after one of two commercial tugs towing a log barge capsized, becoming lodged beneath the giant boat and throwing its captain into the water, according to a Daily Astorian report. One of the sunken tug Tiger’s crew members jumped into the water to help the captain, while another crew member threw the two men a line until they could be pulled to safety with help from a Columbia River Bar Pilots helicopter and a pilot boat. The U.S. Coast Guard launched a 47 ft. (14.3 m) motor lifeboat and a utility boat from Station Cape Disappointment, which stood by as the second tug, the Howard Olsen, took control of the barge and the capsized boat, according to the report. Astoria police, the Astoria Fire Department and the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

Tug Assists Vessel Towing Fuel
Crowley Maritime Corporation's tugboat Gladiator, the state-funded seasonal emergency response tug stationed at Neah Bay, Wash., was dispatched last week to assist a tug towing a loaded oil barge after the vessel temporarily lost its primary electrical power and steering. The Na Hoku was headed down Washington's outer coast when its primary electrical generator engine failed about 12.5 miles west of Cape Flattery. The 105-foot tug was towing a fuel barge containing more than two million gallons of diesel fuel and about a half million gallons of gasoline. Jensen noted the state has contracted to station a standby emergency response tug at Neah Bay since spring 1999.

Fairmount Glacier Delivers Rig in Pointe-Noire
Super tug Fairmount Glacier has delivered rig Falcon 100 safely offshore Pointe-Noire, Congo. The rig was towed from Rio de Janeiro via the South Atlantic Ocean over a distance of more than 3,400 miles. The Falcon 100 is a 1974 build semi submersible drilling rig, owned by U.S.-based Transocean and capable to drill to a depth of 7.620 meters. For this job the Fairmount Glacier was mobilized from Trinidad. First the tug towed the Falcon 100 from her drilling location offshore Macae, Brazil, to offshore Rio de Janeiro.

Chesapeake Marine Training Institute (CMTI) says that Norfolk Tug will be among the maritime companies recruiting new talent at its professional mariner job fair August 13, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CMTI campus in Hayes, Va. Grandeur Of The Seas Loses Power Near Curacao
The Royal Caribbean International cruise ship Grandeur of the Seas experienced a loss of electrical power while approximately 7.5 miles outside of Curacao. "The ship's 2,040 guests and 842 crew members are in no danger," said Jack Williams, president of Royal Caribbean International. "Their safety and comfort are our first concerns. After the outage, the four-year-old ship was functioning on emergency generators. Air conditioning, lighting and plumbing functions were fully restored soon after. The company coordinated with local marine officials to have tugs tow the ship to the port of Willemstad, Curacao. Additional marine operations personnel are being flown on a chartered jet to Curacao to assist with repairs.
Crowley Supports Platform Tow-out, Installation in US Gulf
Crowley Maritime Corp.’s ocean class tugboats and 455-series high-deck strength barges recently played an integral role in the tow-out and installation of Hess’ Stampede tension-leg platform (TLP) in the deep waters of the U.S. Gulf. Demonstrating both nearshore and offshore capabilities, six Crowley vessels worked together alongside other third-party assets to deliver the oversized, overweight platform, tendons and other equipment from the Kiewit facility in Ingleside, Texas, to the site of the Stampede floating production facility, about 150 miles offshore in 3,400 feet of water.

Fairmount Tugs Deliver Noble Tamar Jacket
'Fairmount Summit' & 'Fairmount Alpine' tow laden barge from Corpus Christi US to Mediterranean offshore field. Both tugs towed the barge on which the 18,500 ton jacket was loaded from the US to the field South-East of Cyprus. In Corpus Christi the jacket was loaded on Heerema Marine Contractor's 260 meters long barge H-851, the world’s largest launch and cargo barge. From this port the convoy set sail for the 9,000 miles voyage, which took only 54 days at an average speed of 6.9 knots to deliver the barge in the Tamar field.
“Floating Gas Plant” Toscana Delivered
Tugs Fairmount Summit and Fairmount Alpine have delivered the very first “floating gas plant” in the world, the FSRU Toscana, safely offshore Livorno, Italy. The Toscana, a one of a kind unit, was towed from Dubai via Malta where final equipment was installed. After delivering the Toscana, both Fairmount tugs assisted in mooring the unit to her six pre installed anchors. The Toscana is a so-called floating, storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU) which is now moored 12 miles offshore Livorno and will be used as a terminal and export point for liquefied natural gas (LNG).
RotorTugs Named at 'Herring Party'
The tugs “RT Darwin” and “RT Tasman” built in Singapore, have a power of 6,500 HP and 84 tons Bollard Pull. Each tug is equipped with three Schottel propulsion units providing them with unique maneuverability. Due to the rate of increase in the size of container vessels and the demand of ship owners to attend these vessels with the same limited number of tugs, Kotug has replaced two older tugs by these new strong Rotor Tugs. On their way from Singapore to Europe, Kotug Offshore B.V. contracted the towage of the flat top barge “UR 171” ( 100 x 33 m) to Stavanger, Norway.
Coast Guard Completes Escort of Carnival Triumph
The Coast Guard escorted the disabled Carnival Triumph to the Alabama Cruise Ship Terminal in Mobile Thursday evening. The tug vessel Roland Falgout and four assist tugs towed the Triumph to the Alabama Cruise Terminal following more than a 100-hour voyage from Cozumel, Mexico to Mobile. Resources used to assist the Triumph: The 210-foot Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous and crew, homeported in Cape May, N.J.; Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile MH-60T crew; The 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Stingray crew; Three Coast Guard Station Dauphin Island 45-foot Response Boat — Medium crews; One Coast Guard Station Pascagoula boatcrew; Coast Guard Gulf Strike Team. The Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous arrived on scene Sunday night and safely medevaced one passenger to the Carnival Legend.
Wärtsilä Developing Hybrid Tug for Brazil
Wärtsilä said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a new environmentally friendly tug design for a new port facility being built in the Brazilian city of São Mateus. Two Ramparts Class Tugs for Signet Maritime
In the summer of this year, Signet Maritime took delivery of Signet Arcturus & Signet Polaris, the eighth and ninth tugs designed for them by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, Canada to add to its fleet of 37 conventional and ASD vessels. The tugs were constructed at Patti Marine Enterprises in Pensacola, Florida. The tugs are based on the Signet Weatherly design, but with additional power and higher bollard pull. The vessels are intended for multidisciplinary work including offshore support, towing, ship-assist, ship escort, subsea and rig moves.
