A Raft of Cruise Lines Have Suspended Operations

Several major cruise operators have voluntarily suspended operations in response to the developing coronavirus pandemic. For most, the reason given has been "an abundance of caution".On Wednesday, Viking became the first major cruise line to temporarily suspend operations, canceling all river and ocean cruises scheduled to embark between March 12 to April 30. New MERUS Rings Aboard River Countess

Uniworld’s river cruise vessel River Countess set sail to cruise the lagoon of Venice and the thereto connected river delta. For doing so in accordance with the standards required for the Uniworld fleet, the vessel was equipped with MERUS rings for the complete domestic water system. Pronomar said it protected various applications on the River Countess by installing the MERUS technology at the hydrophore for the complete cold water system, at the boilers for the warm water system and at the kitchen lines for the kitchen equipment.

Sustreanu Named COO of FleetPro Group

Christine Sustreanu will join FleetPro Group June 1, 2015 as its new chief operation officer (COO), the company announced in a press release. Sustreanu, who presently serves as general manager at Uniworld Boutique River Cruise collection, will replace Robert Heijlands, cofounder and COO of FleetPro, who decided to resign when handing over the COO role to Christine Sustreanu. “Robert Heijlands has been instrumental in the successful growth and high client satisfaction of former River Advice, currently FleetPro,” said Robert Straubhaar CEO of FleetPro Group.

Uniworld Again Chooses Merus Water Treatment

Pronomar received an order from Uniworld/Global River Cruises GmbH to apply the Pronomar MERUS technology on board of one of its luxurious River Cruise vessels; the River Beatrice. Following good results on previously equipped vessels, Pronomar equipped complete cold water system, complete hot water system, boilers circulation line and kitchen feedpipe applications on the River Beatrice. In the past, Pronomar equipped a number of other vessels of Uniworld with the environment-friendly MERUS technology disturbing lime scale, corrosion and bacteria in water lines, namely the S.S. Antoinette S.S.

Uniworld to Bid for Delta Queen Steamboat

Uniworld intends to bid for the assets of New Orleans-based Delta Queen Steamboat Company. The assets include the Delta Queen Steamboat trademarks and logos plus the Mississippi Queen and Delta Queen, the classic American river steamboats. "As the leading provider of river cruise vacations for Americans in Europe, it is logical for Uniworld to expand its fleet to include vessels operating on the fascinating rivers of the United States," said Serba Ilich, President and CEO. "The acquisitions of the magnificent Mississippi Queen and the legendary Delta Queen would be a huge honor for our company, considering the great historic and commercial significance of the steamboats in the development of America," Ilich stated.

Bidding War Comes to an End

In what has escalated into a heated bidding war for what was left of American Classic Voyages' Delta Queen Steamboats, came to an end yesterday with Delaware North Companies sealing the deal with the steamboats' parent company. As originally reported on Marinelink last month, Chicago-based Waveland Investments and New Orleans-based Uniworld had submitted bids for the two steamships - Delta Queen and Mississippi Queen - the two remaining ships of the line, which declared bankruptcy this past October. Waveland submitted its $3.75-million bid, with intentions to take over the vessels following their auction on May 3. Delaware North, however had other plans.

Silversea Appoints Tom Russell As Senior VP

Ultra-luxury Silversea Cruises announced that it is expanding its executive team with the appointment of Tom Russell as its new senior vice president of product development. He will join the company on October 14 and will be based in the Fort Lauderdale office. His appointment follows on the heels of the line's recent purchase of the expedition ship World Discoverer. While Russell will coordinate a variety of major projects and initiatives across departments, his primary focus will be to oversee the establishment of the new luxury expeditionary cruise product, having responsibility for its design, deployment and itinerary development. Russell is no stranger to Silversea.
