2023 Coast Guard Engineer of the Year Named

Lt. Lena “Lexie” Royster, a mechanical engineer in the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center, in Washington, has been selected as the 2023 Coast Guard Engineer of the Year.The Coast Guard Engineer of the Year Award recognizes Coast Guard active duty and civilian engineers for their accomplishments and achievements. The award’s selection panel considers many factors including engineering accomplishments, awards, honors and educational achievements.“I am extremely thankful for the opportunities the Coast Guard has given me,” said Royster.

Alfa Laval's PureBallast 2.0 BWMS Gains US Type Approval

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued a ballast water management system (BWMS) type approval certificate to Alfa Laval Tumba AB after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.Most owners of Alfa Laval’s second-generation ballast water treatment systems can now opt to continue operating in U.S. waters, even when their Alternate Management System (AMS) approval expires.The PureBallast 2.0 system generation, launched a decade ago, was developed before the USCG presented its testing regime.

Techcross Secures USCG BWMS Type Approval

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) Type Approval Certificate to Korean manufacturer Techcross, Inc. after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.The treatment principle of the Techcross ECS-HYCHLOR BWMS consists of filtration and electrolysis during uptake and neutralization at discharge. This approval covers models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 300 and 8,000 cubic meters per hour.

Miura BWMS Secures USCG Type Approval

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued a Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Japanese company Miura Co., Ltd., after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.The treatment principle of the Miura HK-(E)R consists of filtration and UV treatment during uptake and UV treatment during discharge. This approval covers models with maximum intake treatment rated capacities between 200 m3/h and 900 m3/h.The Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate is the 31st awarded by the U.S.

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the 30th U.S. Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Hyde Marine, Inc., after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval applications determined the systems met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.The treatment principle of the GUARDIAN-US consists of filtration and UV treatment at intake and UV treatment at discharge. This approval covers models with maximum intake treatment rated capacities between 60 m 3 /h and 3,000 m 3 /h.

USCG Receives Another BWTS Application

The U.S. Coast Guard's Marine Safety Center has received new application for ballast water management system type-approval, according to a post on the Coast Guard Maritime Commons blog. NKBMS Applies for US BWMS Type Approval

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center (MSC) received its 18th application for ballast water management system type approval for the NK-O3 BlueBallast II Plus ballast water management system manufactured by South Korea's NKBMS Co. Ltd.MSC will review the application for compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations in 46 CFR 162.060. Once it has been determined that the application meets the requirements, the MSC will issue a type approval certificate.BWMS type approval applications and approval certificates are posted on MSC’s website.

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the seventh U.S. Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Techcross, Inc., after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.The treatment principle of the Techcross Electro-Cleen BWMS consists of electrolysis during uptake and neutralization at discharge. This approval covers models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 150 m3/h and 12,000 m3/h.A complete list of ballast water treatment systems that have been approved or have type approval applications currently under review can be found on the Marine Safety Center webpage. Redacted copies of all completed type approval certificates are also available.

Sunrui Earns USCG BWMS Type Approval

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the fourth U.S. Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Sunrui Marine Environment Engineering Co., Ltd. after a detailed review of the manufactures type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.   The Sunrui BalClor system incorporates a three step process consisting of filtering and electrolysis during uptake and neutralization at discharge. This approval covers 14 models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 170m3/h and 8500m3/h.

Electronically Controlled Cargo Pump Engines

For many years, cargo pump engines on weather decks of Subchapter D & O tank barges had mechanical-type start and control systems. The installation of electronically controlled engines on tank barges since the 1990s has introduced non-approved electrical equipment associated with engine monitoring and control systems into hazardous locations (Class I, Division 1) on thousands of tank barges nationwide. U.S. Coast Guard District Eight recognized this problem with John Deere manufactured engines and distributed enforcement guidance to their field units on November 22, 2005. Since then, John Deere has engineered retrofit packages for approximately 400 units and is currently seeking approval from the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center (MSC).
