Trimaran Delivered Two Months Early

The development of the unique trimaran warship reached perhaps its most significant milestone when the demonstrator, RV Triton, was delivered two months early by Vosper Thornycroft. The ship took just 20 months to build despite an unprecedented number of challenges in building the advanced 97 m ship. It will start 18 months of trials in October. Approximately 500 sensors will monitor the stresses and performance of the hull form as the Triton, whose crew will include up to 12 scientists, undergoes a demanding trials program in European and Atlantic waters, trials which will also involve the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). Northrop Grumman To Develop Lithium-Ion Battery For Advanced Seal Delivery System

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a $4 million contract by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) for the development and integration of lithium-ion battery technology for the U.S. Special Operations Force's new Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS). Work on the ASDS battery system is being developed in conjunction with Alliant Techsystems, Inc. of Horsham, Pa. The ASDS, which is a mini-submarine intended to clandestinely carry Navy SEAL teams and their combat gear to and from hostile shores, is designed and built by Northrop Grumman's Oceanic & Naval Systems business unit. Trimaran RV Triton visits Washington Navy Yard

A technology partnership between the United States and United Kingdom brought the trimaran research vessel RV Triton to the Washington Navy Yard for a week beginning June 3. Measuring 295 ft. (90 m), the three-hulled ship is the largest motor-powered trimaran ever built, and faster than conventional warships. Together, the U.S. Navy and Royal Navy are testing trimaran concepts using the British research vessel RV Triton. The U.K. designed and built the ship and the U.S. has provided the latest an on-board monitoring technology. The U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has installed this on-board laboratory, called the Trials Instrumentation System (TIS), which monitors and records ship performance. who detailed the design and many of RV Triton's new initiatives.

TM Systems Awarded $2.1M Contract

TM Systems has been awarded a contract worth $2.1 million to supply two Stabilized Glide Slope Indicator (SGSI) systems to National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO). The SGSI systems will be used by NASSCO on ships being constructed for the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). These systems are becoming a critical component for the Navy as they allow helicopter pilots to land safely on ships at sea at a time when the Navy needs increased flexibility to engage in military maneuvers from international waters rather than continuing to depend on foreign states to provide landing permissions or allow U.S. military installations.

AMSEC Wins Two US Navy Contracts

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today that its AMSEC LLC subsidiary has been awarded two contracts in support of the United States Navy. Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., awarded a contract to AMSEC for technical and logistical support services, as well as material kitting services, for U.S. Navy LCC 19-class Amphibious Command ships. Material kitting services involve the pre-packaging of materials required to complete a specific task. Amphibious Command ships provide command and control for fleet commanders. A total of three indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contracts were awarded for these services with a combined maximum dollar amount of $96.8 million. AMSEC LLC was also awarded the initial delivery order valued at $1.2 million.

Homeland Security Technology Workshop to Be Held in RI

The Undersea Warfare Center Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command is co-sponsoring the Homeland Security Technology Workshop to be held in Warwick, Rhode Island on December 10-11, 2003. Topics include sensor and detection technology, deterring chemical and bio-terrorist attacks in the marine environment, risk assessment and management, C4ISR, and homeland security legal issues. Iraqi Navy Ship Repair Facility Opens

VSE Corporation's GLOBAL Division teamed with the U.S. Naval Sea Systems command December 1 at a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the official opening of the Iraqi Navy Ship Repair Facility (SRF) in Umm Qasr, Iraq. VSE helped develop the SRF, which now serves as the Iraqi Navy's maintenance headquarters. The SRF is one of the first fully operational facilities in Iraq as part of the post war infrastructure sustainment. The facility, which was procured as part of a larger Foreign Military Sales case with the Iraqi Navy, will support five different vessel classes. Assisting in the development and management of the facility includes VSE Iraq Team Leader Steve Bennett and VSE Iraq Team Program Manager Hal Jones. "We began work on the ship repair facility in 2010," said Jones.

Moog Supplies Camera System for WHOI Research Vessel

Moog Inc. Space and Defense Group has supplied the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) with a new, rugged camera system for launch and recovery of the Alvin submarine aboard the research vessel Atlantis II. The U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command mandates that the crew of Atlantis II be able to see the latch pin, which is part of the launch and recovery system (LARS) for use with Alvin. Dakota Creek Wins Bid to build Scripps' New RV

The U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced the shipyard responsible for constructing the next chapter in ocean exploration for Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The new research vessel will be owned by ONR for the Department of the Navy and operated by Scripps under charter party agreement. Dakota Creek Industries Inc. (DCI) of Anacortes, Wash., will build AGOR 28, a new “Ocean Class” research vessel that will advance Scripps’ pursuits of the planet’s most vital environmental and scientific challenges. Specifically designed to operate globally, this vessel will support both U.S. Navy and national oceanographic research objectives.

General Dynamics Awarded Navy IT Contract

General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics, was awarded a contract by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command to provide enterprise IT and cybersecurity services to the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division. The single-award, task order contract has a potential value of approximately $81.3 million for five years. General Dynamics along with Purdue University and 10 Indiana-based companies will provide the NSWC Crane Division with enterprise IT service management, cybersecurity, systems engineering, data protection, cross domain security and information exchange and technical advisory services management. Work on this contract will be performed in Crane, Ind.

Sperry Marine Gets Contract

The U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman Corporation  to supply integrated bridge systems (IBS) for three U.S. Navy cruisers. The indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity contract, valued at $2.72m, was awarded to Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit. Under the contract, the new-generation IBS, running on Sperry Marine’s Voyage Management System (VMS) software, will be back-fitted onto three guided-missile cruisers (CG). Sperry Marine has supplied similar VMS-based integrated navigation systems for hundreds of commercial vessels worldwide, including tankers, container ships, bulk carriers and passenger cruise ships.

DRS Wins $22.3m Navy Contract

DRS Technologies, Inc. announced today that it received a $22.3m contract from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command to design, produce and deliver Repair Station Console systems for the DDG Modernization Backfit program. The development and installation of these systems will automate and integrate shipboard damage control communications which increase the survivability of battle-damaged ships. The Indefinite Delivery /Indefinite Quantity contract calls for a potential delivery of 20 ship sets that will be installed as part of the achinery Control System. In addition, DRS will provide up to 10 training sets for the Land Based Engineering Site in . Lockheed Welcomes US Plan to Use Its Combat System for Frigates

Lockheed Martin Corp on Friday welcomed the U.S. Navy's decision to use Lockheed's integrated combat system for future frigate-class ships to be built beginning in fiscal 2019, saying it would allow greater commonality across the entire Navy fleet. "It's great news," Joe North, vice president of Littoral Ships and Systems at Lockheed, told Reuters in a telephone interview. Neither the Navy nor Lockheed provided an estimate for the value of the combat system, but North said each system accounted for less than 10 percent of the cost of the ship.

HII Wins $109.4mln U.S. Navy Contract

Huntington Ingalls  has received a $109.4mln contract modification to carry out support services for the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarines. The company will work to engineer, design, configure and update various classes of submarines, special mission submersible interfaces, support facilities and submarines for foreign military sales programs, the Defense Department said. USS New Orleans Enters Dry Dock

USS New Orleans (LPD 18) entered a dry dock in Bahrain April 25 to continue repair work on the ship's hull. The Navy signed a firm fixed-price contract with Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) Shipyards in Manama, Bahrain to repair New Orleans. The repair contract includes planning efforts, material procurement, pre-fabrication and dry dock repair work and is expected to be completed in 10 to 14 days. The amphibious transport dock was damaged in a collision with USS Hartford (SSN 768) March 20, 2009. The ship dry docked in ASRY Shipyards Graving dock located in Manama, Bahrain.

General Dynamics Awarded $33m in Navy SeaPort-e Orders

General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics, has been awarded four SeaPort-e task orders by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Combat Direction Systems Activity (CDSA) at Dam Neck, Va., to support its intelligence and temporary alteration programs. General Dynamics will continue to provide and expand its system lifecycle deployment and operational engineering support services for the programs’ equipment, systems, subsystems, components, peripherals and auxiliaries. The total potential value of these task orders if all options are exercised is $32.6 million over five years. General Dynamics will support NAVSEA CDSA Dam Neck on-site at U.S. military commands.

NG Awarded U.S. Navy Radar Contract

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has received a full-rate production contract from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command for its AN/SPQ-9B shipboard radar systems, which will enhance detection and tracking of high-speed threats such as sea-skimming anti-ship missiles. Under the fixed-price $26.2m contract, Northrop Grumman’s Naval and Marine Systems Division facility in Melville, N.Y., will supply four shipsets. The contract includes options that could bring the total value to $281.5m. The options encompass a wide range of U.S. aircraft carriers, cruisers and amphibious assault ships, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter.

NG Supplies Nav-Comms for Iraqi Boats

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been awarded a contract to supply the navigation and communication systems for nine new 114.8 ft patrol boats being built for the Iraqi navy. The $19m firm, fixed-price contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit by Swiftships Shipbuilders, LLC of Morgan City, La. Work on the contract will be performed by Northrop Grumman’s Ocean Springs, Miss., facility. Under the contract, each of the vessels will be fitted with an integrated bridge system (IBS) based on Sperry Marine’s new-generation VisionMaster FT navigation technology. The IBS will include navigation radars and electronic chart display and information systems running on TotalWatch multi-function workstations.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) received a follow-on order from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command for additional AN/SPQ-9B shipboard radar systems. Under the fixed-price $41.4m contract option, Northrop Grumman's Maritime Systems facility in Melville, N.Y., will supply six radar shipsets, including the third radar of a three-system procurement for the Royal Australian Navy's Air Warfare Destroyer, and three antenna groups. The follow-on order is part of a five-year $281.5m contract awarded last October to Northrop Grumman with options that encompass a number of ship classes including U.S. Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carriers, Ticonderoga-class cruisers and amphibious assault ships, the U.S.

The Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced the appointment of 10 Board Members to the Naval Shipbuilding Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Donald Winter. “The establishment of the Advisory Board is an important milestone in the Government’s naval shipbuilding strategy, ensuring expert, independent advice to Government on all aspects of this historical national endeavour,” Minister Pyne said.
