SKF to Showcase Marine Portfolio at Nor-Shipping

SKF and SKF Blohm + Voss Industries will showcase its combined range of solutions for the marine industry at the Nor-Shipping trade fair June 2-5, 2015 in Lillestrøm, near Oslo, Norway. At the show, SKF and SKF Blohm + Voss Industries will demonstrate a thruster exhibition model, which will enable visitors to see the full range of its associated products and services. Everything from the bearings, gear coupling and lubrication system, to the SIMPLEX-COMPACT seal and the propeller sleeve will be displayed. In addition, supplementary services, such as condition monitoring and alignment services, as well as SIMPLEX-COMPACT sterntube seals and an environmental monitoring system for measuring and recording emissions will be on show.

SMM 2014 Witnesses Record Turnout

SMM was another full success. With more than 2,100 exhibitors from all around the world, including 150 first-timers, with 50,000 industry visitors and roughly 90,000 square metres of exhibition space, SMM has demonstrated once again what it means to be the leading international trade fair of the maritime industry. After four days brimming with activity, the 26th SMM came to a close today. "We set new records this year," said Bernd Aufderheide, CEO and President of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. "The excellent turnout not only showed that companies are ready to meet the current challenges with determination, but it also revealed a growing appreciation for collaboration," he added.

TOTE Ship Receives Powerplant

When TOTE announced plans to build the world’s largest LNG powered containerships, it stood to reason that along the way many milestones would fall. The most recent came when Doosan Engine delivered the world’s first dual-fuel, low-speed ME-GI engine to NASSCO in San Diego. The engine is built to operate on LNG and/or bunker C oil and will power the first of two 3,100-teu container ships ordered by TOTE. The Korean engine maker originally won the order to build the ME-GI engines in 2013.

Unified Emissions Monitoring: Turbulo Bluemon

Last month at Posidonia SKF Blohm and Voss Industries launched the Turbulo BlueMon emission monitoring system, a system that is designed to record all emissions on board ships via a single system. But the system takes the role of monitoring and control a step further, perceived necessary in today’s climate of varied world emission zones, as the system couples these values with the vessel’s position data based on GPS signals, facilitating compliance with regulations and makes possible auditing and verification of emissions from ships.

RSC Gear Oils Gain Blohm, Voss Approcal

RSC Bio Solutions EnviroLogic 210 and EnviroLogic 215 readily biodegradable and non-toxic gear oils have passed the stringent performance requirements of Blohm. After significant testing, in both static and dynamic evaluations, these synthetic, high-performance products have met the requirements for two of Blohm + Voss Industries’ patented Simplex-Compact sealing systems: the “Standard” Seal and the “Airspace” Nonpolluting Seal. Blohm + Voss Industries has manufactured seals and stern tubes for ships all over the world under the Simplex-Compact trademark since 1970.

SKF Group to Acquire Blohm+Voss

SKF of Sweden is to acquire German ship components provider Blohm + Voss Industries (BVI) from Star Capital Partners. Blohm + Voss Industries is a manufacturer of equipment for critical marine applications, including shaft components (seals and bearings), stabilizers, and oily water separators. The company has around 400 employees and originates from the Blohm + Voss shipyard, which was founded in 1877. SKF will pay 80 MEUR for 100% of the equity of BVI and assumes net loans/cash of 18 MEUR. The transaction is subject to relevant regulatory approvals.

Star Capital: New Owner of the civilian Blohm + Voss

With the deal officially closed on January 31, 2012, the sale of the civilian Blohm + Voss companies – Blohm + Voss Industries, Blohm + Voss Repair and Blohm + Voss Shipyards (plus their subsidiaries) – to the UK investment company Star Capital Partners (SCP) is now complete. The purchase agreement between ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG and SCP for the acquisition of these companies was finalized on December 11, 2011. The new owners will continue to manage and develop the Blohm + Voss civilian business units.

Terresolve’s EnviroLogic 3068 Wins Blohm + Voss Approval

Terresolve Technologies announced the company’s readily biodegradable hydraulic fluid, EnviroLogic 3068, has passed the stringent requirements of the Blohm + Voss Industries’ Stabilizer Group and won approval from the German shipping manufacturer. After significant testing, both dry and with 5% water added, Blohm + Voss reported Terresolve’s non-toxic high-performance product has met the requirements for its Simplex-Compact S-type, Z-type and F-type stabilizers. These three stabilizer types cover the vast majority of marine applications performing at zero, slow and high speeds. “I’m very pleased with this result,” said Mark Miller, CEO of Terresolve Technologies. Under the “Simplex-Compact” trademark, Blohm + Voss has manufactured fin stabilizers for ships around the world since 1961.

Simplex Expands Service Team

Simplex Americas LLC, the representative office for Blohm & Voss Industries GmbH in the Americas, has expanded its Factory Trained & Authorized service team with the hiring of Jay M. Lewis as Service Engineer. Lewis’ 15 years of propulsion and shaft experience includes progressive positions as Outside Machinist for various Marine Contractors, Outside Machinist Foreman at Bender Shipbuilding, and ultimately Outside Machinist Leaderman at Atlantic Marine Inc., in Mobile, Alabama. In addition, he most recently was employed as a specialist propulsion service contract engineer with Rolls Royce Naval Marine. Tracy Pearman, with 19 years of shipyard Propulsion and Shaft experience has been promoted to Technical Manager in charge of the Service Engineers…
