AWS Foundation Accepting Applications for 2025 Welding Scholarships
The American Welding Society (AWS) Foundation is pleased to announce that it is currently accepting scholarship applications for 2025 from welding students across North America.The deadline to apply for AWS National, District, and Section Scholarships is March 1, 2025.In 2024, the AWS Foundation awarded scholarships to more than 1,200 welding students, providing financial support ranging from $1,000 to over $10,000 per recipient. These scholarships benefited students attending more than 400 academic and training institutions across all 50 U.S.

CAD/CAM software maker SSI said it is developing solutions for Computer Aided Robotics Welding (CAR-W) consistent with its recent innovations in the area of 3D weld management. This research project is under the aegis of the U.S. Navy’s National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP). In December SSI representatives met with representatives from Wolf Robotics and Edison Welding Institute to advance this project. Other organizations involved include Bollinger Shipyards, Ingalls Shipbuilding, NSWCCD, Purdue University, Colorado State University, Tony Macijewski and Longview Advisors.

NSRP Awards $11m for R&D Project Portfolio
The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has selected a new round of research and development projects for award, as part of the program's continuing mission to reduce costs associated with U.S. shipbuilding and ship repair. These new projects, valued at over $11 million, including cost share, were among those proposed in response to Research Announcement 13-01, issued in June. Objective: The goal of this project is to transfer a cost-saving and quality-enhancing technology from the aerospace industry to the shipbuilding industry. The vision is to demonstrate the superiority of laser peening over select current shipbuilding processes in specific applications.
Distortion Control "Tool Box" for Lightweight Ship Structures Workshop
This project compiles the physics and principles associated with distortion control derived from previous research and converts this knowledge base into a sequenced set of tangible, “shipyard friendly” implementation solutions designed to optimize several shipyard models. Distortion control modules will be designed and implemented to reduce the production rework associated with construction of lightweight ship structures. These modules will address the major sources of distortion, to include the welding and material handling processes. This project raises the technology readiness level of distortion control techniques to enable shipyard implementation.
U.S. Navy: The Business Case for a Titanium Ship
Participants at a workshop exploring the use of titanium structure for ships found that it is not only possible to construct a ship hull from titanium—or Ti, it could be cost effective. The workshop was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and hosted by the University of New Orleans, where an ONR research program on titanium ship structures is being conducted. Representatives of the shipbuilding industry, titanium suppliers, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force labs, and academia discussed and examined materials, processes and applications. Most ships today are primarily made from steel.

NSRP Eight New Shipbuilding R&D Projects
The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has awarded funding for eight new research projects as part of the Navy/Industry co-funded portfolio focusing on cost reduction in the U.S. shipbuilding and ship repair industry. These new projects, valued at approximately $16m including industry cost share, were among those proposed in response to an October 2009 Research Announcement. Fueled by Navy funding that is matched by cost share provided by industry teams, the NSRP collaboration periodically funds major R&D projects through which new technologies and innovative processes can be developed and implemented as a means of reducing shipbuilding and repair costs for the Navy and the industry at large.
Underwater Technology Convention Held in Hamburg
"Joining and Cutting" are key procedures for the maintenance of technical underwater installations. They are indispensable for harbor construction, hydraulic engineering and flood defense, ship operation as well as offshore installations and pipelines. More than 80 experts attended the two-day Underwater Technology Convention Joining and Cutting in . On the agenda were twelve presentations dealing with current joining and cutting procedures. Possible application procedures and limits as well as quality assurance and health and safety requirements during underwater operations were discussed by the participants. Dr Peter Szelagowski, a German engineering consultant for underwater technology, explained the state of the art technology in comparison to international developments.
Two Shipbuilding Initiatives Receive Funding
The Office of Naval Research announced today the selection of two Shipbuilding Initiative projects to receive a combined total of $1 million of Navy funding.
