Optimarin BWT Retrofit Orders Grow

Optimarin has signed contracts with Wisby Tankers and Hoëgh Autoliners to install its market proven Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) on five existing vessels. The agreement, which comes six months after the Norwegian ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist became the first company to win USCG approval, will see Optimarin fitting units on three bitumen tankers for Wisby and two Hoëgh Autoliners RoRo ships. With a fleet of 19 advanced vessels, Wisby Tankers is a niche leader, utilizing smaller tankers for European trades and its larger vessels…

Saga Shipholding has completed the installation of Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) throughout its entire fleet of 32 advanced open hatch cargo vessels. In doing so, Saga has become the world’s first shipowner to fit ballast water treatment (BWT) systems that are USCG compliant throughout a fleet of this magnitude. Saga originally chose BWT specialist Optimarin as its supplier of choice in 2011, installing its first system, on-board Saga Future in 2012. USCG-approved Optimarin Sees Order Influx

Optimarin has signed a new agreement with Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding (FBS) in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. for the delivery of two 500 m³/h capacity Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS). The contract, identical to one secured last year, comes at a busy time for the Norwegian ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist, which has seen order enquiries go “through the roof” since securing U.S. Coast Guard type approval approval in December. The fresh agreement will see both systems installed on a 155,000-barrel capacity clean products barge, with delivery scheduled for August 2018.

Caterpillar Propulsion for New LNG Cruise Ships

Caterpillar Marine said its dual fuel engines have been selected for a new generation of cruise ships; tThe company’s MaK 16 M 46 DF dual fuel engines, along with the full LNG supply and handling system, are to be installed on four new ships, two apiece under construction at Meyer Werft’s Papenburg (Germany) and Turku (Finland) shipyards. Caterpillar Marine now offers all round LNG propulsion solutions – from shore-side bunkering to on-board storage; from bunker tanks via LNG handling and treatment to the dual fuel engines including automation systems…

MaK, Caterpillar to Partner DNV GL for Condition Based Monitoring

MaK together with Caterpillar’s Marine Asset Intelligence organization has announced that they have partnered with DNV GL to help make the change from time based maintenance to condition based maintenance by leveraging the predictive analytics of Cat Asset Intelligence in accordance with DNV GL’s Survey Arrangement Machinery Condition Monitoring (CM) requirements. The Survey Arrangement of DNV GL recognizes, across multiple dimensions, the value that an industry leading condition based monitoring system such as Cat Asset Intelligence provides to ship owners. First, by using data analytics to provide transparency and validate equipment condition, unnecessary maintenance expense can be avoided by right-sizing maintenance to condition and not to the calendar.

Optimarin Enters Partnership with Zeppelin

Optimarin has agreed an exclusive partnership with Zeppelin Power Systems for the engineering, supply and after sales service of its Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) technology. Zeppelin, a provider of drive, propulsion, traction and energy systems, will now become the exclusive dealer of the OBS in Germany, Poland, Russia and all CIS countries, with the exclusion of Ukraine. The agreement, effective immediately, has been made ahead of the anticipated ratification of the IMO’s BWM (Ballast Water Management) Convention, which industry observers now believe is imminent. Five Cat Engines to Power World’s First LNG-Hybrid Barge

Caterpillar Marine announced the first shipment of Cat 3500 series marine gas engines from its Lafayette, Indiana manufacturing facility. Five Cat G3516 marine engines were selected to power the Becker Marine Systems subsidiary, Hybrid Port Energy, LNG-Hybrid Barge, the world’s first LNG-powered barge in the Port of Hamburg. The LNG-Hybrid barge will provide clean and efficient shore power to cold ironing cruise ships and serve as a backup power provider for the local Hamburg electric power and heat grid. The G3516 is a spark-ignited, gas engine specially designed to operate in commercial vessel applications. The solution is compliant with the strict Marine Classification Societies requirements, SOLAS and is certified by Bureau Veritas.

The keel laying of the world’s first LNG hybrid barge took place at a ceremony held at the SAM Shipbuilding & Machinery shipyard in Komárno, Slovakia. In the presence of representatives of the shipyard, AIDA Cruises, Becker Marine Systems and Hybrid Port Energy (a subsidiary of Becker Marine Systems and the barge shipping company), the laying of the keel was carried out following the tradition of placing a coin on the keel block prior to lowering the first section. The start of cooperation between Becker Marine Systems and AIDA Cruises preceded this keel-laying in the summer of 2012…

LNG Cold-Ironing Cruise Ship Barge on the Stocks

Hamburg-based Hybrid Port Energy GmbH, has awarded a building contract to Shipbuilding and Machinery of Komárno, Slovakia to build the world’s first LNG Hybrid Barge to supply low-emission electrical power to cruise ships in port. The LNG Hybrid Barge will be delivered by summer 2014, only two years after the initial project startup. The 74 m long barge will be stationed in the Port of Hamburg, which will then be the first port in Europe able to provide cold ironing power to cruise ships.

Cat Provides Propulsion Systems for Scandlines Ferries

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems was recently selected to provide combined propulsion systems for two Scandlines ferry newbuilds. The two ferries will each be equipped with 5x MaK 9 M 32 C engines with Cat Common Rail. Each M 32 C engine produces 4,500 kW at 600 rpm for 22,500 kW of total power per vessel. Caterpillar Powers AIDAblu

As she entered the Hamburg, Germany, harbor on February 9, 2010, AIDA Cruises’s newest addition to the fleet, AIDAblu sailed right past the Caterpillar Marine Power Systems headquarters on the historic Elbe River. The AIDAblu represents the fourth ship in a series of seven AIDA club ships powered by MaK engines. The 827-ft Sphinx-class series cruise ship has a passenger capacity of 2,192 over 14 decks. These 4x MaK 9 M 43 C engines in a diesel-electric configuration will provide 36,000 kW (48,960 bhp) for both main propulsion and electric power to the main switchboard.
