At the Awards Luncheon, the Navy League of the United States, a 76,000-member civilian organization, presented its prestigious military and civilian awards to the following: John Paul Jones Award for Inspirational Leadership Commander Scott B. Bawden, USN Commanding Officer USS PROVIDENCE (SSN 719) To a Navy officer who has made an outstanding contribution to the high standards of leadership traditional in the naval service. Admiral Claude V. Ricketts Award for Inspirational Leadership (E7 and above) Senior Chief Aviation Hospital Corpsman Roger M. Grose, USN USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) To a Navy enlisted person who, by traditional performance of duty, has demonstrated outstanding leadership and the professional competence required by his or her rank. Wiley Master, USNS JOHN ERICSSON (T-AO 194) To a Military Sealift Command civil service licensed officer in the deck or engine departments or staff officer in the supply department who has made significant and innovative contributions to the American maritime defense team. Able Seaman Oscar Chappell Award for Outstanding Maritime Stewardship Boatswain Chester D. Blue, Jr. USNS NIAGARA FALLS (T-AFS 3) To a Military Sealift Command civil service unlicensed crewmember who displays selfless dedication to shipmates. The Nicholas Brango Award for Inspirational Leadership Lieutenant Commander Marshall W. Muros, NSCC Commanding Officer, Naval Special Warfare TEAM TRIDENT, NSCC To a Naval Sea Cadet Corps Officer whose outstanding leadership has made a significant contribution toward attainment of Navy League goals in the training and education of American youth. More than 500 Navy Leaguers from around world attended the Centennial Convention in New York City to celebrate the Navy League’s proud 100-year patriotic legacy of supporting the sea services—the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and US -flag Merchant Marine. The Navy League was launched in 1902, with the enthusiastic support and personal funding of President Theodore Roosevelt. As a former Assistant Secretary of the Navy and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Roosevelt contributed part of his Peace honorarium to build a legacy for sea power. Roosevelt’s great great-grandson, Simon Roosevelt, greeted and congratulated members at the Opening Ceremony, Saturday, June 29, bringing full circle the participation of the Roosevelt family in the Navy League. With the theme “Citizens in Support of the Sea Services,” the Centennial year has been marked by hundreds of events and programs sponsored by the 330 councils in the U.S. and around the world. On June 11, 2002 the House of Representatives introduced a Congressional Concurrent Resolution congratulating the Navy League on its 100th anniversary.
