A MAN Diesel delegation recently travelled to China to celebrate CMD’s first year in operation, which coincided with the delivery of the new company’s first engine, an MAN B&W 7K90MC-C6 delivering 31,990kW at 104 rpm.

The prime mover is destined for a 3,500-teu container ship built by Shanghai Shipyards for Norddeutsche Reederei H. Schuldt of Hamburg whose Managing Director, Marcus Hempel, praised the cooperation between his company, CMD and MAN Diesel.

CMD is a joint venture between investors from Chinese CSSC and HHM, and Mitsui, the Japanese ship and engine builder. Ole Grøne, Senior Vice President, Sales & Promotion MAN Diesel, in his speech at CMD’s headquarters in Lingang, 70 km south-east of Shanghai, spoke warmly of MAN Diesel’s many successful years of business in China, and of CMD’s rapid setting up of its new factory and its impressive expansion plans that aim to position China as the leading shipbuilding nation in the world. During his speech, Grøne commented that, “the graduation of CMD to the league of large-bore builders will provide China with a highly needed supply of large-bore, twostroke, marine diesel engines for the current booming market as well as the future. It will also, we feel sure, provide you with a basis for growth and prosperity as a very important player in the worldwide marine business”. He concluded by additionally thanking Mitsui of Japan for its role as an investment partner in the joint venture.
