Rapp Hydema Northwest operates a workshop and local production. Rapp Hydema AK is the service arm of the Alaskan office and runs an engineering yard in Dutch Harbor. Rapp Hydema Subsea (Houston) is responsible for the offshore market.

Named for the first American woman launched into space aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, the Research Vessel Sally Ride was commissioned August 9 at Dakota Creek Industries (Anacortes, Washington). Sally Ride is a U.S. Navy Office of Naval Research sponsored Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research Vessel (AGOR-28). The vessel’s advanced deck machinery will be operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography personnel during extended scientific missions upon the seven seas.
Rapp Marine Hires Vatnehol as CEO

Helge Vatnehol has been appointed Group CEO of Rapp Marine. Vatnehol comes from the position of Senior Vice President Offshore Deck Machinery in Rolls Royce and takes over on September 1, 2014. “The companies in the winch division of former Rapp Marine Group have been collected within Rapp Marine Group. We are delighted that Helge Vatnehol has accepted the challenge to lead the group,” said Board Chairman of Rapp Marine, Olav Fjell. Vatnehol joined Rolls-Royce in 2000.

JK Fabrication has landed DNV certification for its 40-30-3000-DNV series Anchor Winch. Culminating a two-year process, JK’s C-series winch was at last awarded DNV Type Approval in March—the first time ever for an anchor winch in the U.S., the manufacturer said. Conceived by JK’s founder, Jim Kreider, the anchor winch was installed aboard the F/V Arctic Prowler, a longliner recently built in Seattle.

Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar Marine announced the recent delivery of the Robert Allan Ltd. designed FiFi1 escort tug Bison to Norwegian owner Buksér og Berging AS. In essence, Bison is a RAstar 2800/80 escort/terminal ASD tug measuring 28.2m x 12.6m and the ninth of this class to be built by Sanmar. Standard on this model is a sponsoned hull form, which enhances escorting stability. However, a number of improvements have also been made to enhance performance.

Signet Maritime Expands Offshore Fleet

Adding to its fleet of 37 conventional and ASD vessels, Signet Maritime Corporation took ownership of its ninth newly constructed tractor tug in six years. Signet Arcturus , a 105’ x 38’ Z-Drive, designed by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia was delivered by Patti Marine Enterprises of Pensacola, Florida on May 25, 2014. Signet Arcturus is powered by two Caterpillar model C175-16 main engines, each rated 3,417 BHP at 1,800 RPM.

Rolls-Royce won a $31.9m contract to deliver deck machinery for four ocean going tugs, designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions, for Dutch company ALP Maritime Services. The vessels will be constructed in Japan by Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair. The vessels are being developed for towing large structures like oil rigs and floating production units over long distances. The bollard pull for each of the four vessels will be 300 tons and they will be equipped for anchor handling.
