The keel for the second Commitment Class liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered, combination container – Roll-On/Roll-Off (ConRo) ship for Crowley Maritime Corp.’s liner services group was laid yesterday during a ceremony at shipbuilder VT Halter Marine, Inc.’s facility in Pascagoula, Miss. US Ocean Economy Sees Large Growth -NOAA
In 2012, U.S. The U.S. ocean economy outpaced the domestic economy between 2011 and 2012, with an increase of $22 billion in gross domestic product, from $321 billion to $343 billion, according to a new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) analysis. Another Newbuild Tanker Joins Ardmore Fleet
Tanker shipper Ardmore Shipping Corporation’s latest newbuild vessel, Ardmore Seawolf, was delivered by SPP Shipbuilding from the Sacheon shipyard in Korea on August 13, 2015. The addition of the 49,999 DWT IMO 3 product and chemical tanker increases the number of Ardmore vessels on the water to 22, joining sister ships, Ardmore Sealion and Ardmore Seafox. Technical management of the Ardmore Seawolf will be provided by Univan Ship Management.

Royal IHC has named and launched the pipelaying vessel, Sapura Rubi, in a ceremony at the company’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. The naming of the fully integrated vessel was performed by Glaucia Maciel, Human Resource Manager of Sapura Navegação Marítima S.A. Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc., a naval architecture and marine engineering firm owned by Crowley Maritime Corp., has developed two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge concepts. The two new fully customizable concepts aim to offering customers maximum flexibility and improved safety features, the designer said. The first concept involves outfitting an existing barge with an above-deck LNG tank.
G6 Alliance Axes Four Asia-Europe Sailings
Container shippers of the G6 Alliance announced four sailings within their Asia-Europe product have been cancelled in response to changes in market demand. Loop 6 service in week 40 (westbound ETA Kaohsiung, October 1, 2015). Kaohsiung will be added as a westbound call, while Jebel Ali will be inserted on the eastbound leg of Loop 7. The westbound Colombo and Xiamen calls will be added into Loop 4. Loop 7 service in week 41 (westbound ETA Qingdao October 5, 2015).
EnSolve Wins NSF Grant for Sox Scrubbers
Maritime equipment company EnSolve Biosystems won a $500,000 Phase IIB National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to continue commercial development of its EnScrub technology which treats particulates and petroleum hydrocarbons from the effluent of shipboard sulfur oxides (SOx) scrubber systems. The first EnScrub system was installed in early 2015 on a ship operating in the Great Lakes and is treating and legally discharging scrubber water.
R&D Project Targets Better Gangway Operability
Kongsberg Maritime is working with Norwegian shipping company Østensjo and the Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (Marintek) on a new research and development project for operations using motion compensated and telescopic gangways, typically found on accommodation vessels in the offshore sector. The project is part of the Norwegian Government’s innovation program MAROFF (Maritime Activities and Offshore Operations).

Marine terminal operator DP World, UAE Region, has reached an agreement with an affiliate of The Dow Chemical Company based in Jebel Ali to support the distribution of Dow‘s products. The contract was signed recently by Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of DP World, UAE Region, and Moosa Al-Moosa, President of Dow UAE in Jebel Ali in the presence of senior officials from both organizations.
