Chinese Shipyard Repairs Large Bulker on Time
British bulk carrier 'MV Handan Steel' extensively repaired on time in Chinese CIC Group Shipyard
The CIC Chanxing Shipyard reports repairs carried out as follows:
The MV Handan Steel is an ore carrier belonging to an English company, size: LOA 330m Breadth 60m. The main engine repair involved the chemical cleaning of the heat exchanger, M/E air cooler x 2sets, main L/O cooler x 1set, and main & auxiliary atmosphere condenser repair.
The deck work scope mainly included No.5 cargo hold bulkhead partial steel renewal, E/R main engine ventilation duct to be cropped and renewed, installation of the limit for aft D/E.
The coating work included SA2 sandblasting for the bulkhead of five cargo holds from 16m high downwards with painting of two F/C, totally 14,630 m2, and the hull (16000m2) to be SA2 sandblasted with painting of two T/C, one F/C. The contracting time was 12 days.
The main L/O cooler and atmosphere condensers were too big to transport to the workshop for a cleaning job, so it was were decided to clean on spot. Under the control and cooperation from the engineering department, the cleaning was successfully finished in and passed a pressure test after 5 day intense working. At the mean time there was one broken end cover on an air cooler.
First the technician used DECVON to cover the corrosion part and then applied epoxy paint inside end cover. But the ship owner decided to fabricate a new end cover. That time was only 3 days from her sailing from the ship yard. In order to not delay the departure time, the workshop acted immediately and finished the fabrication in two days, so that the whole contract was completed in time.
