Metal Shark now offers Volvo Penta diesel sterndrives in its 29 Defiant patrol boats for customers requiring optimum performance, durability and maneuverability.

The 29 Defiant can now be ordered with twin Volvo Penta D4-225 sterndrives. The first boat has just been placed into service by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

The Volvo Penta D4-225 is a four-cylinder 3.7-liter engine designed specifically for commercial marine applications. The electronically controlled common rail fuel system provides the performance required for applications requiring fast acceleration and high top speed. The Volvo Penta DPH Duoprop robust high-speed drives are designed to handle massive torque forces while providing high efficiency at all speeds, safe handling and easy maneuvering.

The Metal Shark 29 Defiant is a durable mono-hull pilothouse vessel constructed of 5086 aluminum alloy. The 29 Defiant features a unique pilothouse design that employs “pillarless” glass to substantially reduce blind spots. For maximum versatility, Metal Shark incorporated a unique window system that allows the side and aft windows to quickly drop into the hull, converting the vessel from a full cabin to an open boat. In addition to the Volvo Penta diesel sterndrives, the 29 Defiant can be powered by twin outboards or inboards with water-jet drives.

“Volvo Penta diesel sterndrives open a new dimension for the 29 Defiant platform,” said Dean Jones, Metal Shark’s national sales manager. “The sterndrive propulsion options give us a clean transom with easier access to the stern for towing or diver support, as well as excellent performance characteristics in terms of torque, speed, maneuverability and operator control.”

“Volvo Penta diesel sterndrives with our exclusive Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) technology provide a complete integrated helm-to-prop solution with all components perfectly matched,” said Marcia Kull, Volvo Penta vice president, marine sales for North America. “The system offers significant longevity, durability and environmental benefits over other propulsion options. We are very proud to be a part of the City of New York’s law enforcement activities.”
