Chemical Transport by Face Lifted Ships

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

Ferichloride (FeCl3) has been transported since some months via European channels and rivers, from Lille to Paris.

Brand new here are the special double liners in thermoplastic material that are being installed inside the ships by the company Comenco Belgium.

FeCl3 is a strong acid and is very corrosive towards steel. The plastic material used in this new system is resistant against all main acids and alkali.

The tailor made plastic tanks have double walls. This is to protect the ship against any corrosion damage in case of calamities. Between the double walls a special leak detection device has been installed with an alarmsystem that triggers in case of any leak.

The specialised firm Comenco Belgium, situated near Antwerp, makes the inside of the ship completely corrosion resistant with a selfbearing enclosed double safety plastic construction.

With this new system corrosive and chlorite fluids can be shipped via the waterways through Europe, in economical large volumes.

This new shipping system for safe and corrosion resistant large volume transport via the water, will reduce the number of risky chemical tanktransportations through Europe via the crowded roads.

As designers and constructors of plastic liners for large-volume-storage of aggressive industrial liquids, Comenco Belgium has recently developed this new system.

The total internal loadingspace of two ships has been equipped with tailormade plastic double liners, complete with electronic leakdetection devices.

This new system makes it feasible to transport large volumes of corrosive industrial fluids via the waterways and completely in line with the European laws and regulations.

This development by Comenco will create new possibilities for ship builders and ship owners.

The two ships that have recently been brought into operation are carrying each 500 m³ of FeCl3 from Lille to Paris, on a continuous basis.

The choice of the correct plastic materials, the complete design, the construction and the installation are carried out by one and the same company: Comenco Belgium. This way, the full responsibility remains in the hands of one partner: Comenco Belgium. A great advantage for the enduser.
