USCG, State Troopers Rescue Woman ATV Rider Near Kodiak, Alaska

The Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers rescued a 25-year-old female ATV rider near Kodiak Wednesday.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak found the woman in the vicinity of Saltery Cove approximately 23 miles south of Kodiak after she was separated from the group she was riding with and became lost for seven hours.

Coast Guard watchstanders at the 17th District command center in Juneau ordered the launch of the MH-60 helicopter crew after receiving a request for support from Alaska State Troopers who were searching for the woman. The helicopter crew located the woman after finding her abandoned ATV and landed in a clearing before taking her safely aboard.

The woman was flown to Air Station Kodiak where emergency medical responders reported she was cold and wet but otherwise unharmed.

“This case illustrates the strong partnership the Coast Guard maintains with the Alaska State Troopers,” said Lt. Peter Maloney, operations duty officer, Air Station Kodiak. “Joint training exercises and the execution of joint search and rescue operations such as this allow State Troopers and Coast Guard crews to maintain a high level of proficiency, and we’re happy we could help bring this woman home safely.”

The weather on scene was reported to consist of clear skies and 6-mph winds.
