Shipdex Course Held at Korean Maritime University

The Korean Maritime University (KMU) and the Korean Marine Electronics Industry Promotion Association  (MEIPA) received a one day technical seminar about Shipdex and  the process of importing Shipdex data into SpecTec’s  Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), AMOS.

This seminar was held at  KMU in Busan on May 30 thanks  to Yung-Ho Yu, Professor at KMU and Technical Director of MEIPA; Marco Vatteroni,  SpecTec’s  ILS Manager and Shipdex Manager; and Ben Fan, SpecTec’s Sales Director in Asia. Hahn Kang, SpecTec’s Sales Manager and manager of SpecTec’s Korean office, organized the seminar. KJ Radio and NET provided additional sponsorship.

In attendance were shipyards, shipowners and local IT companies, ready to learn more about the Shipdex Protocol and its practical aspects.

The focus of the seminar was on the most important Shipdex principles and their advantages for the shipping community, for example, Common Source Data Base management and the easy import of Shipdex data  into a CMMS. AMOS (Asset Management Operating System), the ERP software owned and distributed by SpecTec Group, provides a ready-made tool to import Shipdex data sets.

Shipping Markets are highly regulated, even from the first stages of a ship’s life cycle. This helps the management process of a vessel and also regulates data sharing among shipping companies and suppliers.

Shipdex is a collection of international business rules developed to standardize and improve the production and exchange of technical information between equipment makers, shipyards and shipowners. It enables equipment manufacturers and shipyards to structure, write and deliver technical manuals in an advanced electronic and standardized format, and makes it much easier and more effective to produce and subsequently manage these manuals, compared to traditional methods using word processors.

Yung-Ho Yu, Professor at KMU and Technical Director of MEIPA said, “Shipdex can be  one of the methods to save resources and manufacture products economically, just like reusable object oriented programming methods in software engineering.”

The justification for this seminar came from the firm belief that e-Navigation could be the key to keep navigation safe by electronic means. The economic aspect of sea transportation as well as protection of the marine environment can be achieved by MSPs (Maritime Service Portfolios), which are provided through the e-navigation infrastructure.

Shipdex can be applied as a branch of e-Navigation by the use of effective electronic troubleshooting manuals when navigation systems receive an alert, in addition to e-Maintenance, e-Inventory, etc. Moreover, economic manufacturing of shipbuilding and ship equipment can be achieved using  Shipdex, because it is verified by the S-1000D standard in the aviation industry.

KMU and MEIPA foster vocational training for the maritime industry, which needs in-depth technical seminars about Shipdex.

Marco Vatteroni commented, “Shipdex is a very important innovation in the field of standardized electronic technical manuals for the whole shipping community. Korea , with its very important shipyards and a large number of manufacturers and shipowners, is one of the more promising shipping markets in the world. The cooperation between SpecTec Group (the author of Shipdex and technical manager inside the nonprofit Shipdex Organization), KMU, and MEIPA is the natural consequence of these two key factors.”
