Westfalia Extends SeaWater Distiller Range

GEA Westfalia Separator Systems is extending its portfolio with a newly developed fresh water generator. The entry-level machines are SeaWater Distillers with a performance range of between 10 and 30 tons per day.

In the medium term this will be extended to include plate units with a capacity of up to 70 tons per day down to less than 10 tons per day at the bottom of the range. The range currently available of 10 to 30 cu. M./day is designed to cover the complete fresh water requirement of merchant vessels with a crew of between 10 and 20.

SeaWater Distillers from GEA Westfalia Separator Systems are designed as plate units, and operate using the evaporator condenser principle. In this process, seawater is initially evaporated in the heating section; salt is pumped off together with the excess seawater, and the steam is condensed in the cooling section. The diesel engines’ cooling water, which needs to be cooled anyway, is used for this evaporation process. Because the SeaWater Distiller operates under vacuum at -0.9 bar, the seawater evaporates at only around 55 °C. The temperature of the engine cooling water, at 80 to 90 °C, is therefore adequate for the evaporation process.
