World's Largest Ship: Pioneering Spirit Awaits Completion
Final construction aboard the world’s largest vessel, Pioneering Spirit (formerly named Pieter Schelte), is wrapping up in the Port of Rotterdam before the vessel can be commissioned off Norway this summer. Built primarily at DSME’s Okpo Shipyard in South Korea, Allseas’ installation/decommissioning and pipelay vessel Pioneering Spirit was inaugurated with a ceremony in Rotterdam in February 2015.

NORDEN CEO: Bulk Market Challenges to Continue

Shipping Season Opens on the Mississippi
M/V New Dawn arrived at Lock and Dam 2 near Hastings, Minn. Wednesday morning, marking the unofficial opening of the 2015 shipping season on the Upper Mississippi River, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The USACE St. Paul District recognizes the first tow to arrive at Lock and Dam 2 as the unofficial start of the navigation season because it means all of its locks are accessible to commercial and recreational vessels.

Russia Names Nominee for IMO Secretary General
The Russian Federation has nominated Vitaly Klyuev, Russia’s Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport, as a candidate for the post of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), marking the first time ever that a candidate from Russia will compete for the IMO SG's post. Russia has been a member state of the IMO since the organization’s inception.

PIRIOU Secures Order for 26-meter WFSV
Shipbuilder PIRIOU in Vietnam has received an order for the BMT Nigel Gee designed wind farm support vessel (WFSV). The vessel, Ocean Wind 8 of Hartlepool, will be delivered to AIS (Marine) 2 Limited at the end of March 2015 for operations in the North Sea. Pronomar has installed two additional MERUS rings on board Holland America Line’s MS Rotterdam, this time in the wellness area for the steam generators. Drying Cabinets Handy On Board Nexus
In 2014, Pronomar equipped Van Oord’s offshore cable laying vessel Nexus with three drying cabinets, each responsible for the drying of eight sets of workwear. Nexus, a 126-meter Damen Offshore Carrier (DOC) 8500 cable laying vessel was delivered to Van Oord in December and is currently being finalized at Damen Shiprepair at Vlissingen, where Van Oord is building and installing the additional cable laying equipment.

Ferus Smit Launches Nordana Sky
Ferus Smit launched multipurpose vessel Nordana Sky in Leer on February 21. Nordana Sky, built as yard number 417, is the first in a series of six that will be delivered to Symphony Shipping. The ship will be chartered out to the Danish company Nordana and sail in her fleet after delivery, planned for the end of March 2015. Nordana Sky is the first vessel of the builder’s new ecobox design, characterized by its flexibility of loading combined with very economical and ecological performance.

Construction Vessel Delivered to Eidesvik Offshore
Eidesvik Offshore has taken delivery of Viking Neptun, an offshore construction vessel from Kleven Verft AS. According to Eidesvik Offshore, TBN Viking Neptun is represents its largest ever investment in the subsea segment. Concordia Maritime Boosts Suezmax Market Presence
International tanker shipping company Concordia Maritime has signed an agreement to charter 50 percent of a vessel in the Suezmax crude oil segment for a period of one year from August 2015, with an option for an additional year. The Suezmax tanker has a deadweight of 158,000 mt and was built in South Korea in 2012. The U.K. Ministry of Defense has signed a $1.3 billion contract with BAE Systems for equipment to build the next generation of warships for the British navy, Prime Minister David Cameron announced today.
