Dubai Drydock Accident Kills at Least 20

At least 20 people were killed and 150 injured after a floodgate collapsed at Dubai Drydocks. According to reports, two panels on a gate collapsed as they were being worked on. The collapse caused a flood combined with large boulders used to anchor the ships, are believed to be the cause a number of deaths. On Wednesday morning, about 500 people were working at the Dubai Drydocks at the time of the accident around 10 a.m. (1 a.m. ET) on Wednesday. Five ships were in the docking area, which maintains large ships in the Persian Gulf. The Officials at the state-owned Dubai Drydocks told Reuters news agency that the casualty figures might rise as divers began rescue operations after the incident, which took place at 9:30 a.m.

ABS reports all its surveyors have been accounted for and are safe following the Dubai Drydocks floodgate failure that took place this morning. Of the multiple vessels in the dock, one jackup rig and two barges are ABS classed. According to ABS Vice President for the Middle East Region Tim Jackson, all 12 ABS surveyors from the Dubai office have been accounted for and no injuries to ABS personnel have been reported.
