The Houston Pilots celebrated their 90th anniversary by inviting community and political leaders, maritime partners and friends to their new facility on Friday, April 1st. Deer Park Mayor Wayne Riddle welcomed the pilots to the neighborhood with a key to the city and presided over the ribbon cutting.

During the ceremony, Father Patout gave a blessing to the pilots and their new building, and the United States Coast Guard honored Houston Pilot Captain Bob Webbon with a safety accommodation. County Commissioner Jack Morman was in attendance showing support for the pilots and the maritime industry.

The new building is strong enough to withstand a category four hurricane because it was built with concrete tilt walls and steel beams. It has 79 windows coated with high impact resistant films to allow more natural light, saving energy.  The focal point of the building is a large meeting room, which is open to community groups, industry members and political entities. The energy efficient building is able to maintain power during a hurricane through an outside generator that uses natural gas rather than of gasoline.

The pilots have also provided the United States Coast Guard's Vessel Traffic Service System with an emergency office, in the event that natural or man-made disaster strikes.
