Applied Weather Technology, Inc. (AWT), a provider of fleet optimization services and onboard voyage management software, announced the debut of its Voyage Calculator program. Voyage Calculator calculates the distance, speed loss and corresponding cost of a voyage from one port to another, taking into account weather, ocean currents, hire rate and other factors.

“Ship brokers and charterers need voyage time and distance estimates to project costs, but simply using great circle distances can give unrealistic or misleading predictions,” said George Schlinkert, VP of Route Advisory Services at AWT. “Voyage Calculator delivers more reliable information based on AWT’s experience routing thousands of vessels each month and our analysis of a decade’s worth of weather data. The improved precision can result in substantial savings, making Voyage Calculator an essential tool for anyone involved in commercial ship operations.”

The output from Voyage Calculator is a cost estimate of a voyage in terms of charter time and fuel consumption. In addition to the weather and ocean current information that yields expected speed loss via AWT’s proprietary Climatological Ship Resistance (CSR) model, Voyage Calculator can account for different fuels and rates of consumption. It can also factor in emission control area (ECA) zones and piracy considerations as it sets a route. Users can access the web-based program and set voyage parameters, the results of which can then be viewed through a full-color online map interface.
