ClassNK Tops 220 Million GT
Classification society ClassNK announced that the ClassNK register topped 220 million gross tons for the first time at the end of November 2013. The announcement was made following the November meeting of the ClassNK Classification Committee, which certified the ClassNK register listed 8,511 vessels totalling 220,212,135 gross tons as of November 30, 2013.
As the ClassNK register broke the 210 million gross ton mark in November 2012, this means that more than 10 million gross tons have been added to the ClassNK register over the past 12 months alone. ClassNK Chairman and President Noboru Ueda addressed this achievement by saying, “The continued organic growth of our register is a result of our hard work and dedication to provide ever better services and reflects the expansion of our service in Europe and around the world.”
Since the beginning of 2013, some 800 vessels totaling more than 9 million gross tons have joined the ClassNK register. In line with recent trends, existing vessels transferred from other class societies accounted for more than 30% of the new additions to the register, driven by transfers from Greek, Turkish, Norwegian and German owners, who together have accounted for 50% of all tonnage transferred to the ClassNK Register so far this year.
Mr. Ueda added that ClassNK expected to continue this expansion, saying, “We will continue to expand our services as well as intensify our global operations over the coming years in order to provide the global maritime community with the very best in classification services around the world.”
