Tognum’s subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen and Vericor Power Systems, based in Georgia, recently signed a new contract to run until 2012 for the supply of gas turbines to be used in complete MTU marine propulsion systems. The existing contract for a period of two years has thus been extended to five years. The so-called TF™50 gas turbines will be used in combination with MTU diesel engines and MTU marine electronics as complete propulsion systems in ships. The main applications are in yachts and fast ferries. The TF 50 delivers a power output of 4,118 kW (5,600 hp). These so-called CODAG systems (combined diesel and gas turbine) offer
the advantages of both types of propulsion system. With longer routes or at lower speeds, the diesel engine is the sole propulsion. For maximum speeds, the gas turbine is switched on as well.
