New RS Class Salvage Ship Delivered

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

June 25, 2014

Construction work has been completed on the Spasatel Zaborschikov - the third in a series of multifunctional rescue-salvage ships (project MPSV07) built to RS class. The ship was delivered to the State Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (SMRCC) on June 20, 2014 and is being prepared for transfer to Vladivostok, its port of registry. Construction of the new ship was carried under a state contract for the Russian Federal Agency of Maritime and River Transport and FGI Directorate of State Contracting Authority for Marine Transport Development Programs. The project was developed by Marine Engineering Bureau. RS class notation: КМ Arc 5 AUT1-ICS OMBO FF3WS DYNPOS-2 EPP Salvage ship.

The vessel is designed for rescue and salvage operations, providing technical support and assistance to vessels in distress, and towing ships and offshore structures in ice and in open water. Its technical capabilities allow it to re-float vessels that have run aground or are reef damaged, pump water from flooded compartments, tow emergency vessels to a place of refuge, search, rescue, evacuate and accommodate people, as well as support underwater diving works to a depth of 300 m, and survey the seabed and damaged objects at depths of up to 1,000 m. The vessel has the capacity to help extinguish burning oil on water, extinguish fires on floating and coastal objects, and clear up spills of oil and oil products, including those with a flashpoint below 60 °C.

The ship was named in honor of a veteran of the Marine Rescue Service of Russia Mikhail Zaborschikov, who took part in more than two hundred rescue and salvage operations, including highly complex ones.

Two MPSV07 vessels – the Spasatel Karev (port of registry St. Petersburg) and Spasatel Kavdeykin (port of registry Murmansk), which were built in 2013, are already operating.
