Scania to Supply 24 V8 Diesels to Finland Navy
The Finnish Navy’s new high-speed Watercat M18 AMC landing craft are to be fitted with twin 16-litre V8 engines from Scania.
Built and designed by Marine Alutech the new landing craft displace 29 tonnes, and are 19.3 metres in length. They are designed for a broad range of applications such as troop and medical emergency transportation, evacuation tasks and landing operations.
The Watercat is powered by two Scania engines, developing 662 kW (900 hp) each, at 2,300 r/min, driving via a water-jet propulsion system. This gives the vessel a cruising speed of 35 knots and a top speed of over 40 knots, with an operating range of 200 nautical miles.
The initial order is for 12 landing craft, and thus 24 engines, with an option for additional deliveries.
Scania is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks and buses for heavy transport applications, and of industrial and marine engines.
