MAN Diesel & Turbo invests Euro 4 million in Hamburg

MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, the global manufacturer of large diesel engines and turbo machinery based in Augsburg, has revamped and modernised its service centre on Hamburg's Hachmannkai. The service centre is one of the major ports of call on the German coast for ships requiring maintenance and repair. With the complete overhaul of the premises, which will be officially opened on 22nd March 2011, MAN Diesel & Turbo is investing in expanding and increasing the efficiency of its services for marine and power plant engines marketed under the MAN | PrimeServ brand.

Since December 2010, around 300 of the Hamburg MAN | PrimeServ service centre’s employees have been working in the fully renovated workshop. In just six months, numerous machines and systems have either been replaced or modernised, and the building itself has been thoroughly renovated. A total of EUR 4 million have been spent on modernising the Hamburg site and giving it a complete facelift.

The aim of the work was to further optimise the throughput times and quality of the processes in the workshop. “We are keen to continuously improve our workflows in order to achieve greater added value and offer our clients the best possible service,” explains site manager Dr. Tilmann Greiner.

As part of the renovations, three outdated milling machines were replaced with a CNC-controlled system, a new laser welding system was installed, existing material stocks were inventoried and around 1,000 tonnes of scrap were disposed of.

Executive Board Member Dr. Stephan Timmermann explains the importance of these measures: “To meet our clients' stringent requirements, we need to be constantly at the cutting edge of technology. Investments such as these ensure that our customers in Hamburg will continue to receive the best, most modern service in future.”

MAN | PrimeServ is MAN Diesel & Turbo’s global after-sales network. At over 30 major service centres on all key markets and in the world's most important ports and harbours, state-of-the-art systems and superbly skilled staff guarantee reliable technical support. The service centre in Hamburg, which has a workforce of around 300, is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, delivering repairs, maintenance and overhauls on ships from all over the world.

The fully renovated MAN | PrimeServ centre in Hamburg will be officially opened on 22ndMarch 2011 at a ceremony attended by customers.
