More than 200 stakeholders from the maritime world gathered at the Culture Yard in Elsinore, Denmark, where the World Maritime University, in collaboration with the Danish Shipowners' Association, hosted a major international conference focusing on maritime CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).

The conference was part of the thrust to formulate maritime CSR policies and to implement them by self-regulation, an area in which analysts consider the shipping industry has been slow to adopt in comparison with others.

Danish Shipowners' Association is in the vanguard to rectify this, and has identified the industry's CSR initiatives in a special report: 'Heading for a Better World'.

Following on from a keynote speech by IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu, came Annette Stube, CSR Director of AP Moller-Maersk and chairman of the Danish Shipowners' Association's CSR committee, CEO Jan Kastrup - Nielsen, J. Lauritzen and CEO of Nordic Tankers Claus Thornberg.

Conference participants came from all over the world, in addition to maritime decision-makers came researchers and students from the World Maritime University in Malmo.
