Stabil Drill, a Superior Energy Services company, has developed the Stabil Drill Ghost Reamer for application in horizontal shale drilling, announced COO Chris Russo.

The Ghost Reamer, an eight-bladed Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) reamer, allows the wellbore to be cleaned and cleared either by back reaming on rigs that have top-drive or for rigs without top-drive, by pulling out to the top of the curve and then rotating forward until reaching total depth. This flexible solution eliminates wiper trips - saving time and money. “Customers were coming to us with issues of getting out of the hole when drilling with a motor in horizontal shale wells,” said tool developer Donnie Williams. “Our years of field and developmental experience allowed us to develop a solution for doglegs, ledges and cutting beds.”

Within the past few months the Ghost Reamer has been used in more than 100 shale applications with positive results. Stabil Drill provides equipment and services around the world with full-service facilities in Louisiana, Texas, Wyoming and Canada as well as manufacturing and specialty machining facilities along the Gulf Coast, in Atlantic Canada and in Scotland.
