Volvo Penta introduced the D12 Heavy Duty diesel engine, a 12-liter marine diesel that, with totally electronic control, is the first of a new generation of engines for heavy commercial operations. The D12s new electronics are designed to provide more efficient combustion with improved performance, and lower fuel consumption. The D12 is an in-line, six-cylinder marine diesel feature unit injectors, EDC system, and a sturdy basic design which includes a seven bearing crankshaft.

"The electronics system used in the engine is one very important reason for the engine's high operating safety and reliability," said Anders Hard, a D12 project leader with Volvo Penta. "The EDC system continuously monitors and controls the engines, enabling it to always operate under optimal conditions."

The new engines is totally electronic, with the Electronic Diesel Control system.
