Telemar (U.K.) Ltd. launched a new product at Seawork International, a Blackbox specifically designed and developed in association with AMI Marine for vessels under 3,000grt.

Vessels are not required to carry Voyage Data Recorders (VDR), so in the case of an incident the ship without VDR or VHF recording may be missing vital evidence to make a claim or counter any claim against them.

According to Telemar, Blackbox is designed to provide a cost effective way of providing smaller vessels, which are not required to carry VDR, the means to record VHF communications and position data as a matter of course.

Blackbox is small, very compact and simple to install and use. It can be positioned easily on a bulkhead or suitable console and connects to virtually any VHF radio system.

Playback is simple too, the manufacturer said. Both audio and data are saved to a 16GB card and replayed via any laptop or computer with Microsoft Windows operating system and appropriate card reader.

Files are stored in AVI formats and recorded in one minute segments making it easy to find a particular period. GPS data is stored every second and displayed on screen in synch with the audio replay, along with a unique iserial number to identify the vessel.
