A new, fully IMO certified Integrated Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) navigation system has been announced today, the Simrad CS68 Integrated ECDIS, designed specifically for the commercial market.

The Simrad CS68 Integrated ECDIS system offers direct access to key dedicated navigation capabilities. Installation and customization options are virtually endless, depending on the particular configuration of a vessel. Available in two screen sizes, the CS68 19-inch model has a 5:4 aspect ratio for streamlined retrofitting. The 24-inch model of the CS68 is a 16:9 widescreen display sporting 1920x1080 pixel ‘Full-HD’ resolution and offers clear advantages in chart visibility and ease of use. Installation is simplified as both 24V DC and 110-240V AC power supplies are built in making these displays suitable for smaller DC-only vessels or larger mains-powered ships. Dual-station PLECDIS (Paperless ECDIS) is available with a single cable to link two units with no extra hardware required. The fully integrated ‘backpack’ design is comprised of the processor, networking and power supply contained in a single, compact package for minimal helm space usage. A keyboard and panel-mount trackball are included and allow for simple and intuitive control. Existing Simrad CS-Series operators will find the new interface usefully familiar, allowing for an easy transition after upgrade.

The Simrad CS68 ships with a USB memory stick containing a recent set of all of the Jeppesen ENC’s and Professional+ charts. The captain can install this chart set, download any ENC updates and purchase permits, and the system is ready to head offshore. A range of third-party charts, as well as Jeppesen licensing options are available to best suit the captain’s purpose and regional requirements. For enhanced situational awareness, the system supports radar, ARPA and AIS target overlay. Pending regulatory approval, the Simrad AP80 autopilot system, when matched with the Simrad CS68 ECDIS will be able to steer a vessel based on steering commands from the ECDIS. This unique TrackSteer capability enables the navigator to program a route and vessel deviation limits into the CS68 and the vessel will auto-steer based on turning parameters of the vessel. The ship’s sensors deliver a clear display of the vessel track and position plot on the screen of the Simrad CS68 ECDIS.

“The new Simrad CS68 is a fully IMO certified professional navigation system,” said Leif Ottosson, CEO of Navico. “Born from decades of award-winning experience at the forefront of electronic navigation, we have developed a cost effective and user-friendly information system, without compromising our high standards and dependability, the discerning mariner has come to expect.”

The Simrad CS68 Integrated ECDIS can be purchased from authorized dealers and distributors throughout the United States and Canada for a suggested retail price of $11,995 for either the 19” or the 24” screen size. The PLECDIS, dual-display option may be purchased for a suggested retail price of $19,995.
