With the blowing of a whistle and pushing of the actuating lever, Marintec China 2013 officially began. The four-day exhibition and conference was unveiled and officiated by senior officials from the industry, namely Su Bo, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Zhou Bo, Vice Mayor of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, Song Jiahui, Safety Director of the Ministry of Transport, Jime Essink, President and Chief Executive Officer of UBM Asia, Andreas Nordseth, Director General of Danish Maritime Authority, Zhang Guangqin, President of the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, Huang Pingtao, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and Dr Martin Stopford, President of Clarksons Research Services. Occupying six halls of the Shanghai New International Expo Center, over 1,700 exhibiting companies met 57,886 visitors from 88 countries and regions, a stable 13% increase compared to the last edition in 2011. This shows that Marintec China is the exhibition to attend. “Caterpillar has been exhibiting in Marintec China for over 20 years. Marintec is excellent and is the largest maritime exhibition in Asia,” said Kody Chan, Regional Sales Director of Caterpillar Marine Asia Pacific. “This year, Marintec China has grown both in size and quality. We met many existing and new customers, and we actually struck a few deals as well.”

As a unique maritime trade show, Marintec China received high praise from exhibitors. “Marintec China is our major event in China. We met with a lot of existing clients as well as new people. It is a vibrant exhibition,” stated Andre Vrijsen, Area Manager of IHC Holland. “Marintec China gives us an idea of what is going on in China’s marine market. This will be important for our future development.”

Neil Gilliver, President-Merchant of Rolls-Royce commented that it was his first time to attend Marintec, yet he already met with many existing clients, new and old friends. He said, “It was a very successful show, and China is such an important market for Rolls-Royce Marine. Rolls-Royce will definitely to be exhibiting again for many years to come.”

Green systems were prominent in the exhibition. Exhibitors showcased more green-related products with their rising importance in the maritime industry. Nicholas Brown, Marine Communications Manager of Lloyd’s Register mentioned, “GE Marine, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) and Lloyd’s Register have been working on a project to show the world that gas turbine technology may be suitable for LNG carrier. We are working in a future plan for a cleaner, greener and hopefully more efficient shipping industry.”

With the theme of “Green Technology, Transformation, Breakthrough”, the Senior Maritime Forum ran in conjunction with the exhibition. The Forum provided an in-depth discussion on the topics it had covered, which included Shipping and Ports, Shipbuilding, Ocean Engineering and Marine Finance. The Forum attracted a lot of attendees who gained insightful information from renowned and high-level speakers from the Chinese government and Chinese companies, as well as from wellestablished overseas associations, companies and organisations. It also served as an ideal platform for the industry participants to exchange market news and learn from each other. Once again, Marintec China has proven to be the definitive maritime trade show in Asia. International exhibitors have seen that this is the most effective gateway for entering the Asian maritime industry. Already, there is a high response rate as exhibitors submitted their re-booking forms for Marintec China 2015, which will be held on December 1-4, 2015 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.
