Seaspan Shipyards Starts Construction Canada’s Joint Support Ships

Canada’s shipbuilding and ship repair company Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan), joined by representatives from industry and government,  celebrated the start of construction on the first Joint Support Ship (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). The steel cutting ceremony held at Vancouver Shipyards is a significant milestone for Seaspan, the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) and Canada’s shipbuilding industry. With the start of construction on JSS, Seaspan is leading the way in rebuilding Canada’s shipbuilding industry.

Cubic Awarded Navy LCS Simulator Training Contracts

Cubic Corporation has received 3 prime contracts from Naval Air Warfare CenterTraining Systems Division. The contracts are for the development of instructor-led (synchronous) and instructor facilitated self-paced (asynchronous) courseware in support of the Littoral Combat Ship Train to Qualify (T2Q) and Train to Certify (T2C) shore-based training requirements for both variants of the Littoral Combat Ship, and for the Mission Packages utilized on both ships. The Littoral Combat Ship program represents the United States Navy’s most advanced designs, capabilities and technologies to create the next generation of surface vessels that can operate in dangerous shallow and near-shore environments.

Huntington Ingalls Industries Promotes Schwartz

U.S. shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has promotedf Garry Schwartz to president of its Mission Driven Innovative Solutions (HII-MDIS) group, part of its Technical Solutions division. He will be based in the Fairfax office and will be responsible for the overall leadership, performance, culture and growth of the HII-MDIS business.Schwartz was most recently the vice president and general manager of the training, cyber and engineering business unit within HII-MDIS. Prior to joining HII-MDIS, Schwartz was a vice president and operations manager with Alion Science and Technology.

GE Aviation’s marine gas turbines are the ideal solution for the Royal Canadian Navy’s next generation surface combatant program, GE Marine said Thursday at the CANSEC 2018 trade exhibition.“GE’s LM2500 family of engines are used by the Royal Canadian Navy and 34 other navies worldwide, setting the benchmark for reliability. The global fleet of GE gas turbines has logged over 15 million operating hours in the marine environment and another 90 million in industrial applications,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE’s Vice President, Marine Operations, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Alion Is Awardee of DoD IACs' $ 3 bln Contract

Ensuring that the US military is supported by the most advanced, effective technologies and tools is critical to the nation’s defense. To meet this need, Alion Science and Technology, a global engineering, technology and operational solutions company, was awarded a contract valued at up to $3 billion to compete for work supporting essential technical solutions by the Department of Defense Information Analysis Centers (DoD IACs). Under the contract, Alion will compete for technical tasks that include research & development, test & evaluation and advisory services. The Defense Systems Technical Area Task Multiple Award Contract (DS TAT MAC) replaces six Information Analysis Center (IAC) contracts. The IACs were designed as central sources for specific technical knowledge and expertise.

Alion Nets $4.6M Navy Contract

Alion Awarded Navy Contract Valued at $4.6M to Analyze Naval Submarine and Surface Ship Survivability and Underwater Explosions Response. Technology Solutions Firm to Provide Engineering Support to Evaluate Fleet Survivability Under SeaPort Enhanced Contract. To help the Navy in determining the survivability and operational reliability of the fleet, Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, will analyze the effects of underwater explosions (UNDEX) on U.S. Navy platforms under a $4.6 million SeaPort Enhanced award. Alion’s team of experts will examine submarines, surface ships and associated platforms for the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division’s Survivability and Weapons Effect Department.

Alion to Help Ontario Ministry of Transportation Acquire New Ferry

Alion Canada was awarded a $1.3 million contract to assist the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario, Canada, in securing a replacement ferry for the Motor Vessel (MV) Pelee Islander. First launched in 1960, the current Pelee Islander runs from Pelee Island, Ontario north to Kingsville and Learnington, and south to Sandusky, Ohio. Alion Canada will serve as the Ministry’s “owner’s expert” and provide naval architecture, marine engineering and vessel construction expertise during vessel design and construction. Under the contract, Alion Canada will provide technical oversight from design through delivery of the replacement ferry. Two ferries currently operate on the island: The Pelee Islander is the older one and carries 196 passengers and 14 vehicles.

Alion Ramp Makes for Safer Ship-to-Ship Transfers

The ability to readily transport personnel and equipment from one ship to another is vital to the success of many U.S. Navy operations, particularly when it comes to seabasing. But tumultuous waters and weather conditions can make the transfer process extremely difficult, placing both the crew and mission in harm’s way. Under contract of the Office of Naval Research, Alion Science and Technology began work on a solution to make the process safer, inventing the Transfer At Sea (TAS) system, an actively controlled ramp to help neutralize Mother Nature’s effects on ship to ship transfers.

Alion Awarded $43 Million to Support Navy Tests

To assist the Navy’s Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force (COMOPTEVFOR) program with effective planning, conducting and reporting of operational test and evaluation tasks, Alion Science and Technology, a global engineering, technology and operational solutions company, has been awarded a $43 million indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity omnibus contract. Alion will compete for task orders to provide critical operational test and evaluation analytical support to COMOPTEVFOR. The work will range from performing acquisition system documentation reviews to developing integrated evaluation frameworks, test plans and reports across the full range of Navy programs.

Alion Nets $73M Navy Contract

To help the U.S. Navy use capital resources wisely and extend the service life of ships, Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, will perform professional support services under a $73.2 million contract award. Alion’s team of experts will provide engineering and technical support across the Navy and with Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters. Australia’s Largest Research Vessel Ready for Launch

At the end of 2013, the team of Sembawang Shipyard of Singapore and Teekay Shipping Australia will hand over the new scientific Research Vessel Investigator to her owners, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), an agency of the Federal Government of Australia. The Investigator will be among the most capable and quietest non-naval research vessels in the world. It will serve Australia in diverse scientific operations ranging over an area from the equator to the ice shelf of Antarctica and spanning almost 1/3rd of the circumference of the globe.

Alion Names Kevin Boyle General Counsel

Alion Science and Technology, a global engineering, technology and operational solutions company, announced that Kevin Boyle has joined the company as General Counsel. Mr. Boyle’s expertise includes government contracts law and litigation, M&A, equity and debt financing, SEC compliance and intellectual property. Ron Crocker Joins Alion Team

USACE and USCG collaborate to make inland waterways safer. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), supported by Alion Science and Technology (Alion), has put forth considerable effort during the last two years to further extend the capabilities of the existing Automatic Identification System (AIS) network to improve the safety and efficiency of navigation along the inland rivers. The USACE works with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and other agencies and stakeholders to operate and maintain the nation’s Marine Transportation System (MTS).

In the very near future, the new scientific Research Vessel Investigator will enter service for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), an agency of the Federal Government of Australia. Investigator went to sea for her initial sea trials in December 2013. Once deployed, Investigator will be among the quietest and most capable research vessels in the world, serving multiple, diverse scientific roles in a geographical areas spanning one-third the circumference of the globe.
