Keppel AmFELS Lays Keel for First Jones Act WTIV

Shipbuilder Keppel AmFELS has laid the keel for the first ever Jones Act compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) at its shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, marking a key milestone for the development of the U.S. offshore wind industry.With several gigawatts of offshore wind capacity to be installed along the U.S. East Coast in the next decade, access to Jones Act compliant WTIVs is of strategic importance to the U.S. offshore wind market. Ørsted Pens Offshore Wind Workforce Deal with NABTU

Offshore Wind Could Bring In $1.7B to U.S. Treasury by 2022

The United States has an opportunity to accelerate offshore wind energy growth, and benefit from 28 new gigawatts of wind power and $1.7 billion in U.S. Treasury revenue by 2022, according to a study released by the energy intelligence group Wood Mackenzie. Congress Responds to COVID19 and Other Challenges for the Maritime Industry

In response to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, the Congressional Research Service released a report that stated global economic growth has declined by 3% to 6% in 2020 with a partial recovery predicted for 2021. Also, the GDP of the U.S. has fallen by 5% in the first quarter 2020. Vineyard Wind to Miss Startup Target Over Permit Delay

Record Year for US Wind Energy

American utilities signed contracts for 4,304 megawatts (MW) of wind power in 2018 that, when combined with non-utility purchases, reached the highest level on record for overall Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) activity with 8,507 MW in 2018.In total, the industry commissioned 7,588 MW of wind power capacity in 2018. Gamesa, Northrop Grumman Launch Offshore Wind Technology Center

Gamesa Technology Corp., a global wind energy company, and the shipbuilding operations of Northrop Grumman Corp., America's largest shipbuilder, launched the Offshore Wind Technology Center to jointly develop the next generation of offshore wind systems that will be deployed in the United States and around the world. Plans call for the development of North America's first offshore wind turbines by late next year. "Virginia is pleased to be the nexus where two industry leaders will join forces in the name of offshore wind innovation," said Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell. "The Commonwealth offers all the attributes needed to provide an optimal location for offshore wind energy production, and to become the East Coast epicenter for the offshore wind supply chain.

Salazar Signs First U.S. Offshore Commercial Wind Energy Lease

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Cape Wind Associates, LLC signed the nation’s first lease for commercial wind energy development on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) on Oct. “This is the beginning of a new era for our Nation in offshore energy production,” Secretary Salazar said in a speech to the American Wind Energy Association in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he signed the lease. “This is an important milestone in the development of offshore wind energy,” said Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEM) Director Michael R. Bromwich, whose agency is responsible for reviewing proposed renewable energy projects on the OCS.

AMSC Continues Sales Growth in Wind Energy Market

American Superconductor Corporation has received new orders for its D-VAR voltage regulation systems for wind farms in Northern Ireland and Texas. With these additional orders, AMSC now has an installed base and orders for D-VAR and PowerModule solutions to serve more than 2,900 megawatts (MW) of wind power worldwide - nearly triple the amount served by AMSC 12 months ago. According the British Wind Energy Association, the installed base of wind generated electricity in the United Kingdom rose 48 percent in 2006 to 1,963 MW. Stankiewicz noted that the new Texas wind farm installation for which the company received a D-VAR order was determined by the local transmission grid owner to require dynamic reactive support to maintain voltage stability when the wind farm is connected to the grid.
