Watchstanders authorized the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Bernard C. Webber (WPC-1101) crew to the scene.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard 7th District command center in Miami received a call from U.S. Northern Command at 11 a.m. reporting that a Socata TBM 700 light business and utility single engine turboprop aircraft departed Rochester, New York at 8:26 a.m. with two people aboard who were reportedly unresponsive to radio calls. The plane was scheduled to arrive in Naples, Florida at noon, Friday. A Coast Guard C-130 aircrew was launched from Clearwater, Florida to help monitor the unresponsive aircraft. Two F-15 fighter jets under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command were launched to investigate.

Peeling paint sidelined USCG’s newest cutter, 'Bernard C. Three months after its commissioning, the fast response cutter (FRC) Bernard C. Webber was back on land to repair chunks of top coat literally peeling from the ship’s hull, reports 'Navy Times'. The majority of the top coat remained in place until the ship got back to dry dock for a repaint; the largest piece to come off was 18 square feet located near the stern on the port side of the ship, Charles “Skip” Bowen, program manager for FRC's at the builders, Bollinger Shipyards told 'Navy Times'.

The 154-foot Coast Guard Cutter Webber is a Fast Response Cutter and will be able to deploy independently to conduct missions such as ports, waterways, and coastal security, fishery patrols, drug and illegal migrant law enforcement, search and rescue, and national defense operations along the Gulf of Mexico and throughout the Caribbean. The Webber is capable of speeds of 28-plus knots, armed with one stabilized, remotely operated 25mm chain gun and four crew-served .50 caliber machine guns, and crew capabilities to hold 24 people.

Bollinger will honor the namesakes for the fourteen (14) USCG Fast Response Cutters (FRC) currently under contract, by hosting a fleet dedication in March 2012. The current FRC contract contains options for up to 34 cutters and is worth up to $1.5 billion if all options are exercised.

The announcement was made by Bollinger executive vice president of new construction, Chris Bollinger, “We are pleased to announce the successful launch of the lead “Sentinel” Class Fast Response Cutter, Bernard C. Webber. This is the first of a new generation of multi-mission patrol boats for the United States Coast Guard, which will vastly improve their ability to perform their duties.

In a letter received on 14 September 2010 from the U.S. Coast Guard, Bollinger was notified of the four vessel award for the 154-ft cutter design, bringing the current contract to eight. The current FRC contract contains options for up to 34 cutters. In September 2008, the USCG awarded Bollinger the contract for the initial FRC, named the Bernard C. Webber. The vessel is scheduled to be launched in November 2010, with delivery to the USCG in the second quarter of 2011.

Coast Guard officials announced Friday that the first Sentinel-class cutter will bear the name Bernard C. Webber in honor of the legendary Coast Guard member. Previously designated to be named the Coast Guard Cutter Sentinel, the cutter Bernard C. Webber will be the first of the service’s new 153-ft patrol cutters. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen approved the change of the cutter’s name to allow this class of vessels to be named after outstanding enlisted members who demonstrated exceptional heroism in the line of duty.
