Course Analyzes Ship Structure Fatigue and Fracture

A three-day course hosted by ABS in partnership with BMT Fleet Technology will help participants learn how design, maintenance and operational issues affect fatigue and fracture of steel and aluminum ship structures. Geared to the needs of naval architects, ship superintendents and engineers responsible for design, material specification, welding, operational safety and maintenance, the course includes practical design and analysis theory applications using direct calculations and sample FlawCheck software.

Fatigue & Fracture Analysis of Ship Structures

BMT Fleet Technology Names Byrtus President

Darcy Byrtus

BMT Fleet Technology Ltd., a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd., an international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has announced the appointment of Darcy Byrtus as President. Darcy joins BMT from General Dynamics Canada where he held the post of Director of Business Development for Naval Programs and Project Management. There, he was responsible for the strategic planning, opportunity identification and pursuit for all naval programs and for the promotion of General Dynamics’ capabilities to the Canadian Department of National Defence.

BMT to Support NSRP Welding Research Project

BMT Fleet Technology Ltd (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has announced its latest research project with the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) to evaluate recent advancements in Integrated Cold Electrode (ICE) welding technology. Jointly funded by industry and the U.S. Navy through NSRP, this project will look at how this technology can improve productivity rates and reduce the construction costs of both commercial and naval vessels. HMCS Ojibwa’s Being Prepped for "Final Resting Place"

BMT Fleet Technology will commence work to enable the decommissioned submarine, HMCS Ojibwa to become the centrepiece at the new Elgin Military Museum of Naval History being built in Port Burwell, Ontario. Ojibwa has completed its route from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to its temporary home in Hamilton, Ontario where it has been transferred to a shallow-draft barge and is currently being fitted with permanent cradles, designed by the BMT project team. Other engineering work such as the safe removal of any hazardous material will ensure the vessel’s integrity before it embarks upon its final journey to the museum in early September 2012. Dr Gordon Fleming

BMT Fleet Technology Ltd, a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, the leading international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Gordon Fleming as President. A former Canadian Naval Officer, Gordon has over 30 years of experience in the aerospace and defence industry with a focus on the naval marketplace. He holds a BSc from Royal Roads Military College as well as an MSc and a PhD in Physical Oceanography from the United States Naval Post-Graduate School.

BMT Fleet Technology To Develop “Green” Ship For The University Of Victoria

BMT Fleet Technology, of Ottawa, Ontario has announced its collaboration with the University of Victoria to design and deliver North America’s first ever hybrid, electric research ship. The vessel, formerly known as CCG Tsekoa II, will be used by the University as a research facility off the British Columbia (BC) coast to investigate changing coastal ecosystems, marine resources and continental shelf and slope dynamics. Funding in excess of $10 million has been provided by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the BC Knowledge Development Fund and other partners, including industry.

Elgin Military Museum, BMT Move the Ojibwa

The Elgin Military Museum in St. Thomas, Ontario, announced its partnership with BMT Fleet Technology Ltd, a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, the leading international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy. As the assigned project manager, BMT Fleet Technology will be responsible for the evaluation, movement and mounting of the decommissioned submarine HMCS Ojibwa from its current location in Dartmouth Nova Scotia to its new home in Ontario. HMCS Ojibwa, an Oberon Class submarine will become a museum and learning centre. “This is an exciting opportunity for BMT Fleet Technology to support the preservation of Canada’s naval heritage. I am delighted that we are able to use our knowledge and experience built up over many years working with the Canadian Navy.

Aker Yards Marine Supports AOPS Project

Aker Yards Marine Inc. (AYM) is a member of the team assembled by BMT Fleet Technology Limited that has been awarded the Definition, Engineering, Logistics and Management Support (DELMS) contract for the Canadian Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) project. The Canadian navy will acquire between six and eight ice-capable patrol ships to assert and enforce sovereignty in Canada's waters, including the Arctic. During the definition phase (2008 - 2009) AYM will utilize its experience and expertise in the design of patrol vessels and icebreakers to support the BMT team in the development of an illustrative definition design for the AOPS.

Project Aims to Improves Ship Evacuation

Pioneering trials measuring the ship evacuation performance of passengers in conditions including smoke and rolling motion, are being conducted as part of a research project led by British Maritime Technology Ltd (BMT) and co-funded by the European Union FP5 Competitive and Sustainable Growth program and Precarn (funding for Canadian partners).
