DFDS Selects NaturaLINE Refrigeration Units

Danish international shipping and logistics company DFDS Logistics said that it is purchasing 50 Carrier Transicold NaturaLINE units, which claimed to be the industry’s only natural refrigerant-based container refrigeration system.Carrier Transicold is a part of Carrier, a leading global provider of innovative heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies.The NaturaLINE units use carbon dioxide, also known as R-744, a non-ozone depleting refrigerant with an ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) of 1. Maersk Invests in Refrigerant Container Units

Maersk Line has ordered the first 100 of a total of 200 refrigerated containers to be chilled by Carrier Transicold’s NaturaLINE natural refrigerant based system. Carrier Transicold is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). Carrier Transicold’s highly efficient NaturaLINE is the first container refrigeration system to use the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a safe and nonozone depleting gas with a global warming potential (GWP) of one.

Hamburg Süd, one of the top refrigerated container carriers worldwide, has ordered 6,500 new containers equipped with Carrier Transicold’s PrimeLINE® refrigeration unit featuring the new energy efficiency-boosting EDGE technology option. EDGE, which stands for Enhanced Digital for Greater Efficiency, includes a set of design enhancements that improve on the industry-leading PrimeLINE unit’s track record for energy efficiency. The EDGE option reduces energy consumption for perishable cargoes by 20 percent compared to a standard PrimeLINE unit in normal operation.

Sea Star Receives New Refrigerated Containers

Sea Star Line, LLC recently took delivery of 150 new 40’ refrigerated containers in year two of a five year equipment replacement plan. The replacement plan aims to reduce the average age of the entire Sea Star Line refrigerated container fleet to less than three years. The new 40’ refrigerated containers are set to arrive at the Blount Island Terminal in Jacksonville, Florida in June 2013. The reefers will be fit with Carrier PrimeLine Machinery, the latest technology available for refrigerated equipment.

Sea Star Enlarges Refrigeration Fleet, Preps for LNG Ships

Sea Star Line, LLC said that it has increased its refrigerated container fleet by 25% in the past year to better serve the Puerto Rico trade. Sea Star is also in year two of a five year refrigerated equipment replacement plan. The replacement plan aims to reduce the average age of the entire Sea Star Line refrigerated container fleet to less than three years. Additionally, Sea Star Line recently entered into a five year agreement to acquire new gensets to support the increased reefer fleet. “We must begin transforming our equipment fleet to meet the needs of our customers and in preparation for our new LNG ships entering the Puerto Rico trade at the end of 2015,” said Jim Wagstaff, vice president of operations.

Carrier’s Refrigeration Unit for Ships Tops Records

Reflecting the shipping industry’s continued trend in the adoption of energy efficient equipment which reduces lifecycle costs, Carrier Transicold reported that its PrimeLINE® container refrigeration unit has surpassed previous records, selling nearly the same number of units in 2011 as in the prior three years combined. “For four successive years, the PrimeLINE unit has outsold all competitive models, and 2011 – a record year for the industry – accelerated this trend,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold. Appel credited the PrimeLINE unit’s success with its industry-leading efficiency, which responds to the market’s need for more sustainable solutions. Container Refrigeration Energy Efficiency Yields Good Returns

Reflecting the shipping industry's continued trend in the adoption of energy efficient equipment that reduces lifecycle costs, Carrier Transicold reported that its PrimeLINE® container refrigeration unit has surpassed previous records, selling nearly the same number of units in 2011 as in the prior three years combined. The PrimeLINE unit's exceptional efficiency -- thanks in part to its efficient digital scroll compressor -- significantly reduces on-board power generation requirements, helping shipping lines save fuel used in the generation of electricity. This, in turn, helps hold down operating costs and reduce emissions related to power generation. The PrimeLINE unit reduces carbon emissions 28 percent compared to previous units.

Carrier Transicold Receives Major Sea-Land Order

Carrier Transicold has been awarded a major contract from Sea-Land Service Inc. for container refrigeration units configured with both Sea-Land's FreshMist humidity control units and EverFresh controlled atmosphere (CA) systems. These units are uniquely configured to offer temperature, humidity and atmosphere control integrated within one unit, says the company. "We have high hopes for the Carrier CA units we've purchased, particularly in areas where TransFRESH service is not available," said Geret DePiper, Sea-Land's vice-president and general manager for refrigerated services. "We also see large market acceptance for Sea-Land's FreshMist system, which is special to both Carrier and Sea-Land. The units purchased by Sea-Land use the industry standard in refrigerants, R-134a.
